Courtney Upshaw had to wait an entire extra day, but didn’t have to wait long before his name was called early in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night. Upshaw, the 6-1, 270-pound outside linebacker from Eufaula, was picked by the Baltimore Ravens with the third pick of the second round. He was the 35th overall pick of the draft, the fifth University of Alabama player taken.
Alabama's basketball team returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 on Sunday. The Crimson Tide will take on Creighton in Greensboro, N.C. Alabama is seeded ninth in the Midwest Regional. A victory over the Blue Jays would set up a likely third-round game against top-seeded North Carolina, which will face the winner of a first-round, play-in game between Lamar and Vermont.
A pair of coveted defensive linemen – Korren Kirven and Dalvin Tomlinson – announced this morning they will be play college football at Alabama. Neither player had verbally committed before Signing Day.
About an hour before the celebration officially begins, a couple hundred people are standing in the front of the stage and a couple thousand more are finding seats in the lower bowl on the west side of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The rain clouds have broke up and the sun is trying to peek through – although the stage has an awning over it should the weather return – just in case.
Alabama’s normal player rotation was disrupted when reserve guard Andrew Steele left the game feeling light-headed and reserve inside player Nick Jacobs tweaked his ankle after landing on the ball. Steele and Jacobs played just three minutes.
President Barack Obama telephone his congratulations on Thursday to Nick Saban for Alabama's national championship victory Monday night. The call briefly delayed a press conference about Crimson Tide juniors Dre Kirkpatrick, Trent Richardson and Dont'a Hightower going to the NFL.
Running back Trent Richardson, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and linebacker Dont’a Hightower will forego their final year of eligibility at Alabama and enter the NFL Draft. Richardson and Kirkpatrick participated in a press conference on Thursday to announce their decisions. Hightower did not attend, but told a media relations official that he believed everyone expected him to turn professional.
So what's going to happen? Beats me. I've covered every Alabama football game, home and road, in the Nick Saban era. I've never gone into a game so thoroughly convinced that it could go either way.
Look, ma, I’m on top of the world. Superdome press box is in the rafters, literally, and we’re checking out our surroundings for tonight’s game. Lance Griffin, Jon Johnson and I are on the LSU side of the field, to the Tigers’ left, between the 5- and 9-yard lines, very, very high up in the air. And not-so-conveniently positioned just under the massive air conditioners.
Jim McElwain was asked this week if LSU and Alabama are the two best defenses he’s seen. “Maybe the ’85 Bears,” the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator quipped. “These are two top of the line college defenses. As an offensive guy, that’s what you want to try to go against. “That’s what it is. … Really, you want to challenge yourself against the best. I’ve been able to challenge myself against the best – Coach Saban and, obviously, this LSU defense.”
Kirby Smart knows there’s going to be a next step for his coaching career. Alabama’s defensive coordinator, whose name seemingly surfaces for every job opening in college football, just wants it to be the right step. He doesn’t know when it will come. He doesn’t know where. But he knows he’s ready for it right now.
Selfishly speaking, as a media member, you don’t know how glad I am that Barrett Jones is returning to Alabama’s football team next season. Jones is articulate, intelligent and, yes, friendly in interview situations. He gets it – even in the crush of media day in advance of Monday’s national championship game against LSU.
Landon Collins, the nation’s top-ranked safety, and Cyrus Jones, rated the country’s sixth all-purpose athlete, added to Alabama’s recruiting class when they verbally committed to the Crimson Tide during the Under Armour All-American football game Thursday night.
I’m writing about AJ McCarron for Friday’s Dothan Eagle. Sessions with AJ and offensive coordinator Jim McElwain? It’s like interviewing Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster in the same morning. McCarron surprised me when he talked about a not-so-organized network with former Alabama quarterbacks, kind of like a mini-support group. He credited predecessor Greg McElroy, of course. McElroy always gave credit to John Parker Wilson, calling him one of his closest friends. Clearly, he continued that relationship.
He directed an offense with a Heisman Trophy finalist, a veteran offensive line and a balanced and often explosive passing attack. So what did Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain do after six points and no touchdowns against LSU on Nov. 5? It was a quiet, lonely drive home.
It's like sitting down with Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. Just had 20 minutes with AJ McCarron, followed by 20 minutes with Jim McElwain.
You don’t have to look far in New Orleans to find trouble, if that’s what you’re seeking. Sometimes, it finds you. Alabama coach Nick Saban stuck to his familiar mantra when asked about curfews and guarding against too much fun in the city this week.
Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have held news conferences in the roughly 14-foot by 30-foot enclosure at an air cargo terminal on the outer edge of Louis Armstrong International Airport. But their arrivals weren’t attended by as many reporters as those waiting for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, who arrived Wednesday a few minutes behind schedule but ready to finish bowl preparations for next Monday night’s BCS National Championship Game against LSU.
Alabama will not have an open date before its visit to LSU next season. The SEC schedule, just released by the league, has Alabama playing on Oct. 27 at home against Mississippi State, then visiting LSU on Nov. 3. LSU likely will be off the week before the Alabama game. The Tigers do not have an SEC game scheduled on Oct. 27.
The awards circuit in college football produces several interesting dynamics. The most memorable from this season was the Heisman Trophy presentation’s seating arrangement that – surprise! – placed Alabama’s Nick Saban and LSU’s Les Miles seated next to each other.
It was only fitting that on Alabama’s awards night, the Crimson Tide learned it would play for the biggest prize of them all. Junior running back Trent Richardson joined safety Mark Barron and linebacker Dont’a Hightower as the team’s permanent captains. Barron and Hightower were also captains last season.
Know what’s wrong with the BCS Standings? Georgia is too low. That’s about it.
Twenty minutes until kickoff and a very late-arriving crowd is trickling into Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama's Nick Gentry, a fifth-year senior defensive lineman, and redshirt freshman receiver DeAndrew White have been suspended for today's game for a violation of team rules and policy, coach Nick Saban announced. Gentry was one of 31 seniors and graduates scheduled to play in the Tide's final home game.
True freshman running back Dee Hart “is still part of the team,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday night after practice. The tailback from Orlando just isn’t practicing with the squad as he takes care of “personal issues” at Saban’s insistence.
Concern about Alabama's passing game issues the past couple of weeks is a hot topic around Bama Nation. AJ McCarron's passing efficiency rating, which is 141.74 for the season, has dropped markedly the past two games. He had a 109.70 efficiency rating against LSU, and a 107.05 rating against Mississippi State.
