Kinsey fire station will serve as polling place

Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver says nobody has anything against city hall, but relocating the polling place to the Kinsey Volunteer Fire Department location will benefit voters.

Officials agreed to fund up to $17,000 worth of paving and curbing in the fire station parking lot to accommodate Kinsey area voters for all future local, primary and general elections. The parking lot will have 23 spaces and up to 2-inch asphalt.

The cost of the entire project is $35,000; the town is picking up the cost of an access road and driveway.

The move, Kinsey Mayor Jason Reneau said, will double the polling place capacity, and allow for better handicap access. Several polling places in the county are established at fire stations.

“Most of the moves to fire departments seem to be a really good move,” Culver said. “They are easy to get in and out of traffic wise.”

Kinsey has the largest number of registered voters in the outlying areas of the county.
