Seagle calls opponent chamber candidate
Mayoral candidate Keith Seagle took a jab at his opponent recently, saying that Mike Schmitz is the “businessman du jour” offered up as the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s next mayor.
“The chamber of commerce chooses the businessman du jour to be the next mayor,” Seagle told the Dothan Eagle editorial board.
Many past mayors with chamber affiliations, including those serving as chairman of the board, have raised taxes, Seagle said. And as Democrats tend to follow
Republicans to elected office, Seagle said chamber-affiliated candidates are often followed by non-chamber candidates.
As an example, Seagle named Jimmy Grant, chairman of the chamber in 1971-72, elected mayor in 1973 and in 1977. Grant, who raised taxes during his term, was succeeded to the mayor’s office by Kenneth Everett, who did not raise taxes, Seagle said.
“There there was Alfred Saliba, a former chamber chairman, who raised taxes in 1992,” Seagle said. “He was followed by Chester Sowell who was not so closely tied to the chamber and did not raise taxes. Mayor Pat Thomas, who is chamber affiliated, raised taxes.”
And now there is Schmitz, the businessman of the day, Seagle says, who served as chairman of the chamber during 2003-04.
But Seagle’s portrayal of chamber members as being the only tax-happy leaders, is not completely accurate.
Everett didn’t raise sales taxes, but his administration did impose a lodging tax and raised sewer and water rates, Everett told the editorial board Thursday.
Everett also said he is probably one of the longest continuous members of the chamber.
Seagle didn’t mention Larry Register, who was elected mayor in 1985 after Everett left office. Register is a long-time member of the chamber and did not increase the sales tax.
Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker responded to Seagle’s statement by saying the chamber “does not endorse a candidate, nor do we choose somebody to run for office.”
“The chamber is a business advocacy organization that is membership driven and represents diversity,” he said. “It provides an opportunity for people to get involved in the community ... enabling members to problem-solve and take on issues, make things happen and grow this region.”
Schmitz, a local car dealer, cites his business experience and success as one of the factors qualifying him for the office of mayor. Schmitz is also former chairman of Dothan by Design, the economic recruiting arm of the chamber.
“The chamber represents a thousand business people and employs the majority of people in the city,” he told the editorial board. “My good relationship with the chamber is a good thing. When I got involved with the chamber, I realized there is a lot of hard work put in by a lot of folks.”
Grant said when his administration raised sales taxes by one cent in the 1970s, there was little to no opposition.
“When I was mayor, the city had not built a new school or park or had a new industry in 20 years. The commission suggested a 1-cent sales tax to help the school system. Young Junior High School was going to have double sessions because there were so many students. Dothan High School was about to explode. We built Northview, Beverlye and Honeysuckle. And nobody said anything about it. Everybody knew it had to be done.”
Grant said he doesn’t understand the implication that there is something wrong with chamber leaders being mayors. He said most mayors over the last 40 years have been business owners and chamber members.
“If you don’t have business experience, you will go into the mayor’s office and be lacking. It is a big business and the people involved in business know what to do,” Grant said. “That is very, very, very important.”
The election is July 14.

Do any of you really think that Mike is going to keep his business in “Beautiful Down Town Dothan” as he calls it? Of course not! As soon as he wins the Mayor spot he will move the remaining part of his business and all of his “LEMONS” to the Circle location. Money, Money, that’s what it is all about. Look out Dothan, more taxing and more spending, that’s what we’ll get.
Jay is exactly right.Populist slogans like “the end of tax and spend” sound great but the truth is quite a different thing. The big problem with this is that Mr Everitt is the hypocrite that voted to raise fees and taxes three times when he was mayor.
As for Keith Seagle, he is someone that I have known for a number of years. This is exactly the reason that I could not vote for him as our mayor as he does not have the skill sets nor the demeanor necessary to represent our city. As for cutting grocery taxes, it sounds great except for the fact that it has to occur at the state level. The commission does not arbitrarily have the authority to set aside grocery taxes. You could say he is guilty of false advertising.
Groger’s: What you speak of is a national movement to change the way we view and pay taxes. That is not the case here. A Fair Tax system in some form would be great, but that is far, far away from a local issue… especially the issue at hand here.
The problem with Seagle’s “tax cut” is that its illegal, ill-researched, and without a plan. Its no different than me saying I am going to cut the amount of tax the state takes from my income.
Sure I can try, but the state will punish me and make me pay back what I cut plus some. Its no different. The state will slap his hand if he does this and punish him accordingly while its the services of the city that must “pay it back” and then some. Its lose-lose for the citizens.
Your argument may be true on a national level, but falters on this local scale.
its such a sad Day in America when the concept of cutting taxes is called foolish, stupid, childish and the other idiotic phrases mentioned here. The media and government sure have done a great job of convincing you all how necessary taxes are. I don’t even know what country I’m living in anymore, but it sure isn’t the one our founding fathers envisioned. And it’s becoming less and less a place I even recognize. A complicit media and government controlled education system are mostly to blame I suppose. That and a lack of good common sense. But lets be very clear…the government can not GIVE you ANYTHING. They can only TAKE from you, then disperse it back to you in forms that a generally less effective than you could have spent in, and more likely in ways that won’t benefit you at all.
keith seagle may very well be the worst possible candidate ever in the history of elections. this guy is just not very bright. his ideas are childish. he hopes to get elected by appealing to the voters who are not capable of independent thought. what a moron
it is amazing how visible and “helpful” a commissioner tries to become once election season rolls around…
For those of you that live in District 5 you should be aware of a few things when it comes to Mr. “no backbone” Barbarre.
In July of last year, a buisness owner in his district called him repeatedly requesting assistance with problem he was having the Dothan utilities department. Mr. Barbarre, took the first call, then he disappeared leaving the citizen buisness owner with no representation. He’s a coward and a wimp. The people in District 5 desreve better. If he did what he did to EFS of Dothan Inc. its just a matter of time before he does to you.
Jay - I am in Barbaree’s district and i will NOT be voting for him. I will be voting for Schmitz. I understand the split on the commission you refer to - but how do you know how the other candidates from district 5 will vote? YOU DON’T. Trying to tie Barbaree to the coat tails of Schmitz will not work. There is a big difference in the stock of those two gentlemen.
Toobad has a very limited understanding of what has happened with our economy. More than 95% of businesspersons are honorable and trustworthy and positively drive our economy. However, horribly relaxed regulatory oversight and predatory lending practices that allowed individuals to purchase homes that they did not have the credit rating to qualify for nor the earnings to pay for are your culprits.
Locally, campaign slogans such as “I Will Cut Your Taxes” and “The End Of Tax And Spend” sound great and tap into the emotion that we are overtaxed. The facts do not back this up. Remember, Mr Everitt raised water and garbage fees and passed a tax on motel and hotels when he was mayor. Talk about hypocrisy.
Dothan is on the lower end of city sales tax rates when compared with the other 9 cities that comprise the 10 largest municipalities in Alabama. Dothan was recently recognized as one of the most affordable places to reside in a study that compared our city to all of the other metropolitan areas in the United States. Also, Standard and Poors this past week increased Dothan’s credit rating which is practically unheard of in a recession.
If I am attempting to decide the future of my city and whom I am going to vote for using only fact based information, it is an easy decision. Based on this criteria, Mike Schmitz, Paul Lee, Taylor Barbaree and Larry Mathews should be elected on July 14th.
Mickster: Why don’t you ask Schmitz which District 5 candidate will support his cause before making up your mind. The only truth Keith has spoke is that if he gets one of his guys in… his agenda will be pushed… and then we can say hello to the Chester Days part 2.
Mike will be a sitting duck without support. If you are for Mike, vote for those who support him. Barbaree, Lee, & Matthews.
Also, found it funny to fins Keith at the Chamber luncheon today. Can you say hypocrite?
