United Way campaign ahead of last year’s pace

The harsh economic times may be limiting people’s bank accounts, but according to the Wiregrass United Way, it hasn’t hampered their desire to help others.

The Wiregrass United Way’s annual campaign, which began Sept. 4, has already garnered more than $1.7 million, 72 percent of its $2.6 million goal, and there is still a month left to go.

“People are in greater need this year, and people like me who have a job need to help people,” said Walter Hill, chief executive officer of the Wiregrass United Way. “Given the state of the economy, I’m thrilled. We’re pacing just a little bit ahead of last year. We feel that gets us in good shape.”

As for the country’s economic condition, Hill says it may have led to people giving more this year.

“One hundred percent of the agencies would tell you that the needs are greater this year,” Hill said. “The food banks are getting more food requests, agencies helping with utility bills are getting more calls than ever before. Because of that, we have a number of companies that have raised more money this year than last year.”

The campaign raises money through payroll deductions. Companies assisting the campaign allow workers to contribute certain amounts from their paychecks to the United Way.

“We do the campaign in fall, the people pay us the rest of the year, and we make monthly payments to the agencies,” Hill said.

The proceeds go to benefit 38 different agencies throughout Houston, Coffee, Dale, Geneva and Henry counties. Those agencies serve a variety of residents, including special needs individuals, children’s groups and family support organizations.

Hill said residents and businesses have extra motivation to contribute this year.

“If we meed out $2.6 million goal, the Wiregrass Foundation will write us a check for $400,000,” Hill said.
