Letter: Sadly, football is king
Published: November 5, 2009
If you are a senior adult or at least an older adult, you probably remember “What it was, was football,” a comedy record about football by Andy Griffith, the sheriff on the Andy Griffith Show. You should pick-up a copy; you will laugh your head off.
Football was my life for 25 years as a hard-nosed coach. I love football. I watch football every Saturday practically all day and night.
I used to be a football addict. But I have learned there are more important things in life than football. If you can relax and watch a game for fun instead of getting all stewed up because your team is not doing so well, then it is great entertainment.
However, I’m afraid the game most of us in the South love has become a god. That’s right — a “god.”
It is obvious that more people talk about, attend and stew over football, especially Auburn-Alabama, than worship our Lord on Sunday.
We have a hard time understanding how the Israelites in the Bible actually worshiped man-made idols they carved from gold and silver. But aren’t we doing the same thing when we put a game before God?
By the way, I bet most of you can’t even remember who won the Super Bowl last year. Who won the college national championship year before last?
So what I’m trying to say is just this: very sadly, football has become king in Alabama displacing our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. We should be ashamed.
Yes, I love football, but not at the expense of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I hope you agree with me. I would love to hear your response. Jesus is my passion in life and I hope your passion, too.

Imagine that. People paying more attention to something they and everyone else can directly witness than to some ficticious being fabricated by scientifically ignorant, vastly superstitious men from long ago.
I hate that people these days pay more attention to basketball than to the Easter Bunny. Why, it’s down right shamgeful.
I do not know of this player named jesus christ;does he play for alabama or auburn?
