Auburn DB Savage injured

AUBURN — Aairon Savage, who missed the entire 2008 season with a nasty knee injury, sustained an unknown injury during a recent summer workout, coach Gene Chizik said in an ambiguous statement Tuesday.

Chizik did not specify what Savage injured or how severe it was.

“Aairon Savage did suffer an injury while working out, and at this time, the extent of the injury is still being evaluated by our medical staff,” Chizik said.

AuburnSports.com reported Tuesday afternoon that Savage suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon and had already had surgery.

Just a little less than a year ago, Savage dislocated his kneecap and tore his ACL and MCL during a fall practice, which ended his 2008 junior campaign. He was expected to have a prominent role that year, as he came off an injury-filled 2007 season where he recorded 26 tackles in seven games. He had 53 tackles
and an interception as a freshman.

The Auburn coaches treated Savage gingerly during spring practice, as they eased him into a role that had yet to be defined. He’s fast enough to play
cornerback and big enough to play safety.

“Aairon has a great football IQ,” safeties coach Tommy Thigpen said in a recent interview with the Opelika-Auburn News. “He’ll sit down and draw plays and
talk to you about football. I love that.

“I’d love to coach him.”

If Savage’s injury is season-ending, he would have to apply for a medical hardship waiver with the NCAA to play in 2010. He redshirted his first year at Auburn.

Tigers land seventh commit for 2010: Auburn took another step toward filling an area of high need Tuesday when it landed high-school linebacker Jessel Curry as its seventh commitment of the 2010 season, according to numerous scouting Web sites.

Curry, the son of former NFL linebacker Buddy Curry, chose the Tigers over a bevy of schools, including West Virginia, to whom he had previously committed.
He reopened his recruiting several weeks ago and made two visits to Auburn, the first of which came during the now-infamous Big Cat Weekend. Curry is the
third visitor from that weekend to commit to Auburn.

Curry (Buford, Ga.) joins Jake Holland (Pelham) and Jawara White (Troy) as members of a new slew of linebackers in the mix for 2010. Aside from offensive
line, the linebacking position is where the Tigers are most thin this season.

Curry is rated as a three-star, according to Scout.com. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder helped his Buford High team to its second straight Georgia Class AA state
title last season.
