Area teams march on to state

GULF SHORES — Wicksburg lost in the championship game of the Class 3A South Regional, but the Panthers are still bound for the state tournament.
Wicksburg won three games on Saturday to reach the title game against Straughn, before falling 12-1.
“We were out of gas,” Wicksburg coach Josh Cox said.
But the Panthers can refuel and head to Montgomery thanks to beating Choctaw County (11-0), Luverne (6-4) and Slocomb (8-0) to reach the finals against Straughn.
In the win over Choctaw County, Hillary Dykes went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double, Erica Johnson had a triple and single, while Brittany Treadaway
and Arica Dykes each had two hits. Ginny Woodham got the win on the mound.
In the win over Luverne, Woodham went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Treadaway and Johnson each had two hits and Dykes had a double. Biranda Greathouse got the win.
In shutting out Slocomb, Johnson went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Dykes and Treadway had two hits. Greathouse got the win.
Kristen Arnold got the lone RBI for Wicksburg in the championship game.
In Class 1A, Kinston beat Pleasant Home 2-1 for the championship.
Sarah Mock was named MVP of the tournament after she earned her second win over Pleasant Home on the day. Kinston defeated J.U. Blacksher 4-2 in the
day’s first game, won by Bethany Holley. Kinston then beat Pleasant Home by the same score.
Pleasant Home had to advance out of the loser’s bracket to play in the championship game. Pleasant Home defeated Ariton 5-1 earlier in the day before the
first loss to Kinston.
Then Pleasant Home beat Ariton again to clinch a berth in the state tournament and reach the championship game.
In the title game, the teams were tied at 1 with two outs and two strikes on Holley. She delivered the game-winning hit to score Amanda Crohn.
There were several championship games held late Saturday night involving Wiregrass teams as games were backed up throughout the day.
Both the champions and runner-ups will advance to the state tournament in Montgomery next week.
Class 5A: Rehobeth lost to Spanish Fort 8-0 in the championship late Saturday night. The Rebels beat St. Paul’s 4-1 in an elimination game to reach the title game. Eufaula lost to Spanish Fort 3-0, beat Greenville 5-2 and then was eliminated in a 4-3 loss to Rehobeth.
Class 4A: Ashford lost to St. James 7-0 in the championship game late Saturday. The Yellow Jackets beat UMS-Wright 4-3 in 10 innings in an elimination game.
In Class 2A: G.W. Long beat beat Millry 10-0 and New Brockton 3-0, but lost to Excel 4-1 and 1-0 to be eliminated. New Brockton beat Leroy 4-3, but was beaten by Mobile Christian 11-0 in addition to the loss to G.W. Long.
