The Slocomb football team will have a new leader this fall.

Jeff Mitchell, the Red Tops’ coach of the last four years, tendered a resignation as coach, athletic director and teacher, Geneva County Schools Superintendent David Snell confirmed Friday.

“Jeff Mitchell has resigned, and it was accepted at a board meeting (Thursday night),” Snell said.

Snell did not give a reason for Mitchell’s resignation, but said it was for his teaching, coaching and athletic director positions.

Mitchell taught physical education and math classes at Slocomb.

Efforts to reach Mitchell Friday were unsuccessful.

A graduate and former assistant coach at Slocomb, Mitchell led the Red Tops to a 19-25 record in four years, with three state playoff teams.

This past year, Mitchell guided Slocomb to a 9-3 record and the second round of the Class 3A state playoffs. The nine wins were the most at the school since
the 2003 state quarterfinal team won 11.

Mitchell graduated from Slocomb in 1986 and was an assistant coach there for six years prior to being elevated to head coach following the retirement of
veteran Dwight Tew.

Prior to his six years as an assistant coach at Slocomb, Mitchell spent six years as offensive line coach in the early 1990s at Dale County High School.

Snell said the Geneva County school system is already in the process of advertising for the Slocomb position.

In another development, Snell said the school system is also advertising for openings for a new girls basketball coach at Geneva County and a new boys
basketball coach at Samson.

Kevin Hancock led Geneva County’s girls program last year and Pate Harrison was the coach of Samson’s boys team.

Snell did not go into details of how those openings came about.
