Michael Schmitz answers heart’s call to serve others
While most young men his age are thinking of college careers or future employment, Michael Schmitz, 18, has his heart set on another type of work - helping orphans in foreign lands.
Dressing for success

Local residents see Obama’s inauguration as fulfillment of MLK’s dream
“I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.” With that oath of office, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts at noon EST Tuesday, Mr. Obama became the 44th president of the United States.

Community activities will celebrate MLK holiday and inauguration
History will come to life next week as the Wiregrass area prepares to celebrate two events. On Monday, the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered for the work he accomplished as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Following closely on the heels of that remembrance will come the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. central time. Both occasions will be celebrated with local events.
MVP participants turn in impressive showing
When he introduced the MVP Program to the youth of Henry County in the summer of 2008, the Rev. Joseph Spears envisioned an opportunity to develop young minds and bodies into productive citizens. Now, less than a year into the process, the Rev. Spears, pastor of St. Peter A.M.E. Church of Headland, believes the Men of Valor and Purpose (MVP) Program, which utilizes sports to teach discipline, has surpassed even his expectations.
Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood will hold art auction
For more than 30 years, the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El of Dothan has hosted an art auction to benefit various non-profit agencies and charities in the community. At the same time, local art enthusiasts have been able to add some noteworthy art pieces to their collections.

DWAL offers creative avenue for area artists
They come in all talent ranges. They work in a variety of media. They are in all stages of life. While they may differ in a variety of ways, they all have one thing in common - a passion for art. Combined, they form the Dothan Wiregrass Art League, which is housed in the Cultural Arts Center on South St. Andrews Street.

Celebrating a Victorian-style Christmas at Landmark Park
They came. They saw. They learned about the past. More importantly, they gave. Visitors to Landmark Park’s annual Victorian Christmas were treated to an old-fashioned holiday event that featured wagon rides, cane syrup making and many other events that would have been commonplace on a late 19th century farmstead. But the 1,600 or so visitors did more than soak up the atmosphere of days gone by. They also opened their hearts to help others have a brighter Christmas.

Celebrate Christmas Victorian-style at Landmark Park
It’s a holiday tradition that started in December 1979, and it will continue this Sunday as Landmark Park hosts its annual Victorian Christmas. From 1-4 p.m., the public is invited to attend the open house and celebration of the season at Landmark Park. There is no official entry fee, but visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item with them to be donated to the Wiregrass Area United Way Food Bank.
Brannon family members ring bell to honor their brother
The nine children of Joe Bill Brannon (deceased) and Wilma Brannon, 85, of Cowarts, have not allowed their family lives or their work schedules to separate them. In fact, they gather once a month just to reflect on what is happening in their lives. Saturday was no exception, well, except for the fact that they gathered at the Food Court entry to Wiregrass Commons for a special occasion - to man the red kettle for The Salvation Army.
Hobby turns into business for Newville’s Tracy Dunlap
At the bottom of her business card is this biblical message: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven,” which is found in Matthew 5:16. It’s a message Tracy Dunlap, owner of This Little Light of Mine Country Candle Company in Newville, takes to heart.

Huckabee makes stop in city to promote his new book
Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, had aspirations of being president of the United States. But his aspirations were put on hold once he realized Sen. John McCain of Arizona had built a large enough lead in the delegate count to gain the Republican Party’s nomination. He bowed out and gave his support to his one-time rival.

Amie Pollard and Ken Carlile, morning show hosts of Pollard and K.C. with 93.7 Kickin’ Country, may be new to the call letters, but they are not new to the Wiregrass community. For years, the duo has helped children, organizations and several other functions during their time of need, and this year will be no different.

Roane Lawler reflects on his career in law enforcement
After a 33-year career in law enforcement, Roane Lawler, 62, has decided it’s time to begin a new phase in his life. Instead of pursuing criminals and solving crimes, grandchildren, a farm, gardening, golf and other hobbies will now occupy Lawler’s time.

Festival will celebrate heritage of American Indians
Bright regalia, the sound of drums and other musical instruments, chiefs in full headdress. These are some of the sights and sounds that will be seen and heard during the American Indian History Month Festival, which will be held Saturday, November 22, in the Dothan Civic Center. The event, which is open to the public and hosted by the Multi-Cultural Initiative for Change, will be held from 5-10 p.m.

DPD urges caution for Halloween events
The city of Dothan will observe Halloween from 5-8 p.m. Friday. During that time period, the Dothan Police Department encourages all participants to exercise caution and common sense. Parents, says Officer Thomas Davis, DPD public information officer, should set the tone for the evening’s events.
