Lebo likely on the way out

March 10, 2010

Here’s thinking Jeff Lebo is out as Auburn’s basketball coach by the end of the weekend.
Unless the Tigers pull a miracle and win the SEC Tournament in Nashville, look for Lebo to be shown the door.
Though he’s run the program with class since taking over, and is a decent floor coach, there’s really been very little progress made.
His career very much mirrors that of former Auburn coach Tommy Joe Eagles, who just never could get over the hump during his tenure at the school.
It seems Lebo has been snake-bitten at times during his time at Auburn, but it’s his failure to recruit well overall which will likely spell his doom.

Needed win for Auburn

January 22, 2010

By Jon Johnson

Not that beating LSU is a big deal, but just getting an SEC win period was big for Auburn on Wednesday.
The Tigers’ inside game looked pretty good for a change, and Frankie Sullivan came up with a clutch 3-pointer with just over a minute to play in lifting Auburn to the victory.
Now at 1-3 in the SEC, Auburn has a tough task of playing at Vandy on Saturday, hosts Ole Miss next Thursday and Alabama at home two days later.
On paper, Auburn will be an underdog to both Vandy and Ole Miss, and probably a slight favorite against Bama.
As the season progresses, every game is big for Jeff Lebo. I believe he’s on the hot-seat, and I’m not sure this Auburn team is good enough to save his job.

Auburn prepared well for Iron Bowl

November 27, 2009

By Jon Johnson

Auburn was well-prepared in the early going on offense, and the defense played its most inspired game of the season.
While Alabama is the better team, this is a game Auburn obviously came very close to winning.
It shows the impact this new coaching staff has had on what is practically the same group of players from a year ago.
Looks like from here Chizik and his staff has Auburn certainly headed in the right direction, and some really bright days ahead.
There were plenty of big-time recruits on campus for the game, and if this coaching staff continues to impress on the recruiting trail, Auburn will be back contending for championships sooner than a lot of us figured.

Here’s my Iron Bowl pick for AP

November 23, 2009

By Jon Johnson

It was 20 years ago when an undefeated Alabama team rolled into Jordan-Hare Stadium only to be upset by Auburn in the first ever Iron Bowl to be played on the Tigers’ campus. Can history repeat itself? Nope. This Alabama team is far superior. The emotionally-charged Tigers will hang tough for a half or so, but the Tide will eventually wear them down. Alabama 31, Auburn 17.

Easy win welcomed

November 08, 2009

After nine tough weeks, Auburn needed an easy weekend. It got such with a game against Furman and took full advantage.
More important than the 63 points Auburn put up in the win was the chance to play many, many young players.
Auburn virtually emptied its bench following halftime and let second, third and fourth-stringers get in on the act.
It was especially beneficial for back-up quarterback Neil Caudle, who looked good throwing the football and leading the team to several second-half touchdowns.
Should starting QB Chris Todd go down at any point in the final two games, Caudle at least now has a little more game experience under his belt and shoud be a capable replacement.
Big one coming up at Georgia on Saturday. It should be pretty much a toss-up. If Auburn can pull it off, of course that would mean win No. 8. It would also mean a much more attractive bowl date on the horizon.
