Auburn deserves leap into rankings

October 04, 2009

Auburn entered the AP rankings on Sunday at No. 17, somewhat of a surprising leap considering the Tigers didn’t find themselves in the poll after a 4-0 start.
While Auburn didn’t blow Tennessee away Saturday night in Knoxville, there was never any doubt that the Tigers were superior to the Volunteers.
Auburn is proving itself to be a good, solid football team, and on the verge of being termed very good. The ranking was warranted, and if Auburn can win at Arkansas on Saturday, the sky is the limit for this bunch which should continue to get better as the weeks pass.
I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be very tough to get a win at Arkansas, but Auburn is playing with enough confidence right now to win any time it steps on the field.
I thought the Auburn defense tackled much better against Tennessee. The offense is good enough to score against any team it faces, and if the defense can continue to improve and avoid injuries, Auburn can be a real factor in the SEC West race.

Auburn-Tennessee matchup

September 28, 2009

By Jon Johnson

I believe this weekend’s game in Knoxville will be a matchup of two very similar teams.
I give Auburn an edge in the talent department, but Tennessee being at home is certainly an advantage for the Vols.
Thus, it will likely come down to which team capitalizes on mistakes by the other.
I do believe Auburn will be able to put up enough points, but here’s thinking Tennessee will dent the scoreboard as well.
Which team performs better on special teams may tell the story. Auburn has to get better in the kick return department.
Auburn comes into the game with more confidence, but Tennessee may be a bit more hungry with two losses already on its slate.
Pretty much a toss up, but here’s thinking Auburn finds a way to win.

Unreal finish

What a victory for Auburn against West Virginia on Saturday night. I just never really felt like Auburn had this one until the final interception sealed the deal.
Give the Tigers credit for battling and battling after West Virginia held the upper hand in the early going.
We obviously see a much different Auburn team this season as opposed to last year. The team keeps focused on the task ahead and believes it can win no matter the circumstances.
Gene Chizik has it going on right now, but things will get tougher in a couple of weeks with back-to-back road trips to Tennessee and Arkansas.
Still, with this team, you’ve got feel like the Tigers have a chance every time they take to the field.
Refreshing indeed.

Impressive Auburn win

September 13, 2009

The Tigers 49-24 win over Mississippi State on Saturday was certainly impressive from a scoring standpoint. But what may have been most encouraging about this win for Auburn was the character the team showed when falling behind after a blocked punt was returned for a touchdown.
Just like that, Mississippi State had taken the lead and erased a 14-0 AU advantage to go ahead 17-14.
Yet just like that, Auburn scored two quick touchdowns to lead 28-17 at halftime and never look back.
So far, this is a fun bunch to watch. The Tigers get off the deck in a hurry and fight back without hesitation.
The enthusiasm and energy shown by the players and coaches is far, far different than what we saw last season.
Good stuff indeed.
