It’s back!

We used to publish Discover Wiregrass yearly, but took a different approach for 2009.

The Eagle combined a few special sections to create a really nice magazine product that features a slice of life in the Wiregrass. There’s things to do, people to meet, places to visit and lots of fun stuff you may not have known about the area. Copy desker Erin Hitt championed the project this year. She’s got a thing for ‘zines!

If you want a hard copy of the magazine, let me know. I’m sure we can round one up somewhere around here.

The best part is that we are about to kick off with the second edition of the magazine. Got an idea for something you’d like to see? Drop us an e-mail. We are always looking for a neat story.

Here’s hoping that one day it’s on magazine racks around the area. But for now, look in the Oct. 30 edition of the Dothan Eagle for a copy.

Life of a Honeybee

Looking for something to do with the kiddies? On Friday, Landmark Park will host its last Animal Adventure. I’ve heard good things about their programs for kiddies, but not having one or not being one leaves me without a first-person experience.

Here’s the info:
Philip Carter will teach “Life of a Honeybee” and why the honeybee is truly one of nature’s most amazing insects and explain their importance to both humans and plants on Friday. This is the final part of Landmark Park’s Animal Adventures. Children ages 5 and older are encouraged to come with their youth groups and families to see the wonder of native and exotic animals. These programs are sponsored by Wachovia. Programs begin at 10 a.m. in the Interpretive Center at Landmark Park. Admission is free with paid admission to the park ($4 for adults, $3 for children 4-15, free for members and children 3 and under). A noon program may be available if the morning session fills. Reservations are required, plus a 50 percent deposit for groups of 15 or more. Contact the park at 794-3452.

Low country fun

Several members of the Eagle crew headed downtown on Saturday for the Low Country Boil.

It was the perfect day. Bright and sunny, with plenty of shrimp!

Thanks to Whitney for having the smarts to bring her camera along and grab a few pictures.

The fundraiser for the library proved to be pretty popular. Every time I went to get in line for a plate of food from the Basketcase, the line was flowing down Foster Street.

Great news for the event, but it is hard to be patient when all you can smell is deliciousness.

Here’s the staff cooking up for a crowd.

The Bistro was open for lunch and looked like it was staying busy, The District had a beer truck out front and Tara had a line coming out of her Foster Street Coffee House with visitors trying to get their hands on a sweet treat.

I had a mini-cheesecake covered with chocolate. The boyfriend had a giant chocolate chip cookie. Yum!

Lots of the Foster Street merchants were open, including a hair salon, two thrift stores, the WIND market and some vendors had things out for sale. Sorry if I missed anyone.

The event also had a bouncy house for kids and live music.

Good times. I hope they merchants come together again to throw this block party.

Dominoes—game on!

Dominoes—who knew that the World Championship was held right here in the area? I might have to learn how the game goes if there’s $15,000 involved.

The 34th annual World Championship Domino Tournament is July 10-11 in Andalusia.

The tournament, sponsored by the Andalusia Rotary Club, is held at the Kiwanis Fair Complex and promotes the game of dominoes among people of all ages.

The event begins July 10 with the singles tournament starting at 8 a.m. followed by a singles round robin at 1 p.m. The $15,000 Fantastic Domino Sweepstakes drawing will also begin at 7 p.m.

On July 11, the doubles tournament starts at 8 a.m. followed by doubles round robin at 1 p.m. Finals in adult singles and doubles begin at 7 p.m. with event awards presented at 9 p.m.

Music by Moonlight

Some friends have been to the Music by Moonlight series and had good things to say about it!

I’d go, but I’ll be at work editing a paper. Maybe I can sneak away on my dinner break?

Music by Moonlight continues at Landmark Park’s Victorian gazebo on July 9 at 7:30 p.m. with Larry Andrews, a former featured singer on Norwegian Cruise Lines and at Disney World and Busch Gardens. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets.
