Downtown Dothan is on the move

July 22, 2008

By Christie Kulavich

In today’s paper, Debbie Ingram wrote about how downtown Dothan is working on a comeback. Read it here: 2008 is year of progress for downtown

It sounds like there’s lots of great thing headed downtown, including some new restaurants. Well, I have an itch for new, local places to eat, so I dragged the boyfriend to lunch at Blue Moon Cafe on South Foster Street, which has recently opened.

The restaurant is so neat on the inside. It looks like a little shack on the bayou. I had a shrimp po’boy and Rodney had a bowl of jambalaya (the special for Tuesday)  that was full of goodies. The menu is small and simple, but the specialty changes every day. Rodney and I are looking forward to going back on a Thursday to sample Blue Moon’s shrimp etouffee.

Now I’m going to have a hard time deciding where to head downtown for lunch.

By Christie Kulavich

This one’s for the grownups: You must be 18 to enter, 21 to drink.

Head over to the Wiregrass Museum of Art Thursday night for live music, cocktails and snacks. Ryan Kinder, an acoustic musician from Birmingham, will be playing.
It’s $5 with a cash bar, but entry is free for museum members.
The event runs from 5-7:30 p.m.

Have a drink for me because I’ll be sitting right here at my computer.

P.S. Here’s Ryan Kinder’s MySpace page: Ryan Kinder

If you’re on MySpace, make sure to befriend the Wiregrass Museum of Art! It’s so hip, it’s got its own page. Wiregrass Museum of Art

Happy Fourth weekend!

By Christie Kulavich

Oops, I’ve been away for a while. I feel a tad bit guilty. Sorry!

Hope you had a great Fourth of July. I was sitting right here at the Eagle, working on the paper for the Fifth of July.

I did get off a bit early (for me) and hung out on my porch and watched the Dothan Country Club fireworks. Heard there was quite a crowd at the peanut festival fairgrounds for Family Fourth, and that the traffic was atrocious.
Our photographer Max Oden went and got some pretty neat fireworks shots.

It’s only Monday

June 16, 2008

By Christie Kulavich

Well, I did a whole lot of nothing this weekend. The highlight was probably my strawberry margarita at Chili’s.

It’s only Monday and I am already looking forward to this weekend!

The Slocomb Tomato Festival is this weekend and I cannot wait. I am madly in love with tomatoes, especially the Slocomb variety. This whole Samonella thing has got me blue, because I can’t get tomatoes at restaurants. I’ll be sure to stock up this weekend.

Slocomb Tomato Festival
When: Saturday, June 21
Where:Slocomb
Info: A parade will start Saturday at 10 a.m. in the downtown area. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., and entertainment begins at noon. There will be arts and crafts vendors all day, and a kid’s carnival will be from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for ages 3-12. Ages 2 and under are free.

Another piece of produce will have a celebration this weekend ... Headland is hosting the first-ever blueberry festival. Hopefully, I can swing by Headland as well.

Headland’s first blueberry festival
When: Saturday, June 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: On the square.

If you need something to do before the weekend, check out Art After Hours at the Wiregrass Museum of Art. I’ve heard from some people that it’s a good time, but working night shift tends to cramp my evening schedule. Check it out and let me know what you think. Maybe I can sneak over there on my dinner break.

June Performer: The Pantastics, Steel drum band
Cost: $5, free for museum members
