Three local police departments moved toward clearing some unsolved bank robberies this week after witnesses helped nab a suspected serial robber in South Carolina.
Federal and state authorities believe Cecil Stephen Haire, 51, of Douglas, Ga., is the federally dubbed “Limping Bandit” who robbed 23 banks over three years that included three Colonial Banks in Enterprise, Ozark and Dothan, respectively.
Haire was arrested Friday following the National Bank of South Carolina bank robbery in Mount Pleasant, S.C., after a chauffeur and bank manager followed the vehicle Haire drove and recorded the tag number.
Mount Pleasant Police Information Officer Steve Meadows said Police Cpls. Justin Henbree and Carter Baldwin arrested Haire without incident in a parking lot.
Meadows said Haire later gave a statement about his involvement.
A press release from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said the Limping Bandit’s style was to wait in line as a customer before each robbery, produce a black handgun from under his shirt and approach the teller before limping while running away.
Dothan Police Lt. David Jay said federal agents were on the scene with local police when a robber fitting the description hit the Colonial Bank in Dothan in December 2007.
“Right after the robbery we were called from some people in South Carolina and the FBI tracked a suspect down, but locally we had never had any leads,” Jay said.
“It’s good to know law enforcement throughout the country can work together so quickly to try to close an unsolved case. Since our robbery we had been almost notified immediately that he had hit again.”
Meadows said solid information from an eye witness is ultimately what led to Haire’s arrest.
“This is a bad guy that needs to come off the streets ... This was the second time he hit us,” Meadows said.
FBI Spokeswoman Denise Taiste said the FBI is working with local authorities to determine how Haire will be charged.
How much money Haire is accused of taking over the years was not released because the case is still under investigation, she said.
