Momma Goldberg’s Deli a good place to eat

I’ve been looking forward to the opening of Momma Goldberg’s Deli for some time now. My wife, Jill, has long sung the praises of Momma G’s, having been an Auburn graduate. After 30-plus years of business in Auburn the company is now offering franchise opportunities to other towns like ours.

The deli opened last week at, and my wife and I have been twice — once to dine-in and once for take-out.

I had driven by the place a few times early in the week and noticed the parking lot to be full of cars at lunch. We decided to get there early on Thursday to check it out and hopefully beat the crowd. We did — but barely. On the inaugural trip the first thing I noticed was the nice clean atmosphere and a well-organized ordering system. The menu was great looking and had an extensive amount of items to choose from.

Momma Goldberg’s offers a lot of different sandwiches and salads — too many to name. They also have a few vegetarian selections and their signature, Momma’s Nachos.

I went with the Beef and Cheese, and Jill had the Turkey Delite sandwich. The bread was really soft; the veggies and meat were fresh. They use a steaming method of melting the cheese onto the meat which locks in the flavor. Both sandwiches were delicious, and the dining area was a great place to have a nice lunch.

Once the lunch crowd arrived, literally two minutes behind us, I noticed the line got really long. If you’re on a strict time frame for lunch, you may want to call ahead or show up early.

We also went back Saturday night for take-out. The restaurant was not as crowded that night, and I was able to soak in the experience a little more. I challenged the staff a little bit, and they were knowledgable of the menu items and what choices were available. They were also very friendly and professional.

I ordered the same sandwich, and my wife went with the chicken salad melt. We enjoyed both meals just the same at home as in the restaurant.

This is a good place to eat, but I’m not sure if they really set themselves apart from other delis in town like McAlister’s and Hots but maybe that’s the nature of the deli business, who knows. The thing about delis is you can order pretty much the same thing at each one and depending on their style the sandwich tastes completely different.

One thing I can say is this: Momma Goldberg’s Deli is now in my rotation of restaurant choices in Dothan. and I look forward to chowing down on some Momma’s Nachos the next time I visit.
