Fifth grader organizes adoption fundraiser
Today is National Adoption Day, yet few people realize how many lives adoptions touch. After hearing a young couple at her church describe the expenses they encountered in adopting a child, 10-year-old Miriam Yates organized a fundraiser to help them out.
She knew how badly the couple wanted a child and even prayed for them to have a baby. As one of five children, Yates couldn’t imagine a couple remaining childless throughout their marriage.
She filled a big jar with jelly beans at Christ Church International and invited people to pay $1 to guess how many pieces of candy were in the jar.
So far she has raised $45.
But expenses range from $10,000 to $45,000 and more, depending on whether or not the couple has to pay the expenses for the mother when she gives birth.
Christ Church International will hold a Christmas Bazaar on Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to help raise money for the couple, who wish to remain anonymous. For more information, or to make a contribution, call the church office, 671-1150.
