Landmark Park hosts Heritage Forums

Landmark Park’s annual “Heritage Forums,” a series of guest speakers offering programs on state and local history, begin on Sunday, July 6, at 3 p.m. with “New Discoveries at Old Cahawba,” presented by Linda Derry.

Derry, Historical Archaeologist and Site Director at Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, will discuss Cahawba, Alabama’s first capital city. Today, Cahawba is a ghost town of relics, ruins, rare natural beauty and ghost stories. Derry will discuss the town’s history and highlight new archaeological discoveries and natural wonders that converge at Cahawba.

Programs take place each Sunday in July at 3 p.m. in the Interpretive Center at Landmark Park. Programs are free with paid admission to the park ($4 for adults, $3 for children 4-15, free for members and children 3 and under). Space is limited and reservations are required. Other topics in the series include “Trade with the Creek Indians” on July 13, “The History of Longleaf Pine Forests in Alabama” on July 20 and “Rosenwald Schools: A Benchmark in the History of Black Education” on July 27.

French Boys Choir visits local church

The French Boys Choir will visit Dothan as part of their 2008 United States tour to include concerts in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri and Indiana.

Twenty boys and young men from schools, colleges and universities near Lille in northern France will sing in concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, at Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church (ELCA), 2643 Murphy Mill Road in Dothan.

Founded in 1972, the choir regularly sings in musical and choral festivals across Europe, including four times before Pope John Paul in Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica and once at the White House in Washington, D.C. In addition to live concerts, they maintain an active recording schedule and have appeared in numerous television and radio broadcasts. Their repertoire includes sacred, secular and international folk songs.

Class tackles safe food handling

The SenioRx Wellness Class will focus on safe food handling during the hot summer months. Join Gail Taylor as she leads the class on Thursday, July 17, at 1 p.m. at the Houston County Health Department’s Conference Center, 1781 E. Cottonwood Road in Dothan.

Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. People age 55 and older as well as people on disability can attend the SenioRx Wellness program, a partnership between Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging, Alabama Department of Senior Services and the Alabama Department of Health. 2-1-1 office needs volunteers

The Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 office is seeking volunteers to help answer the phone due to the high volume of calls.

Free dance lessons offered

Come and learn some fancy footwork on Wednesday evenings in July. Lessons will be offered at 7 p.m. at Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church, 2643 Murphy Mill Road in Dothan. Animal Adventures continue at Landmark Park

Landmark Park will present the “Animal Adventures,” special one-hour educational programs providing unique opportunities to learn about the natural world on Fridays through July. Children ages 5 and older are encouraged to come with their youth groups and families to see the wonder of native and exotic animals.

Programs begin at 10 a.m. in the Interpretive Center at Landmark Park. Admission is free with paid admission to the park ($4 for adults, $3 for children 4-15, free for members and children 3 and under). Reservations are required, plus a 50-percent deposit for groups of 15 or more. There will be no program on July 4.

Remaining programs include “Let’s go Fishin’” on July 11; “Great Gators” on July 18; and “What Came First ...” (a program on chickens) on July 25
