Deer management meeting held Sept. 4

A white-tailed deer management meeting will be held at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan on Sept. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Topics include food plot planning and planting as well as quality deer management. Speakers will be Patrick Cook, regional extension agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and Bill Gray, wildlife biologist with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Oct. 1 entry deadline for art show

The Dothan Wiregrass Art League will have its fall “Expressions” art show Oct. 10-11 at Dothan’s Cultural Arts Center, 909 S. St. Andrews St. Admission is free, and the public is invited. All local artists are invited to exhibit. The entry deadline is Oct. 1. There are two modes of display: 10-by-10 booth for $20 or 10 feet of wall space for $15. ‘Grits’ performance benefits girls’ home

A performance of “Grits on the Side” to benefit the Chrysalis Home for Girls will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, at The Understudy Theatre, located inside the Dothan Dance Club at 2563 Ross Clark Circle between Ace Hardware and Lowe’s.

A cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will begin at 6:30 p.m. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Dothan Dance Club or from any Chrysalis board member. Call 792-1268, (866) 206-2337 or 792-5166. The cost for the evening is a $50 donation to Chrysalis.


Community job fair being organized

A community job fair is currently being organized to take place at the Dothan Civic Center on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The fair is to bring employers together with hundreds of applicants from the Wiregrass area for entry level and specialized employment positions. This event will be free for anyone attending to include all employers and employment or job placement agencies. Booth space is limited. To reserve a free booth for the job fair, call 712-0090.


Junior Miss tickets go on sale Sept. 8

The 2009 Houston County Junior Miss program is set for Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Dothan Opera House. Tickets may be purchased at the Dothan Civic Center box office for $15 beginning on Sept. 8.

Junior Miss is a national scholarship program for high school senior girls that reward outstanding young women for their achievements. Participants are evaluated in five categories of competition: interview skills, scholastic achievement, talent, fitness and poise.


Men’s Health Day 2008 set for Sept. 13

Southeast Alabama Medical Center’s Men’s Health Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. — rescheduled due to Tropical Storm Fay. The free event will offer screenings for prostate specific antigen (used to detect prostate cancer), vascular, glucose, thyroid, vision, blood pressure, body fat, and height and weight analysis. The health day will be held in Davis Gym at Dothan High School, 1236 S. Oates St.

Low Country Boil held at Landmark Park

The ninth annual Low Country Boil fundraiser for Landmark Park is set for Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. in the park’s Stokes Activity Barn. The event includes food and music, plus activities and hot dogs for the kids. Entertainment will be provided.

A “low country boil” is a tradition along the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. It’s a one-pot dish of boiled shrimp, corn, potatoes and other ingredients.

Tickets are $60 per person ($50 per person for park members). A limited amount of reserved tables of eight are available with the option of sitting under a tent or inside the barn. Seating for individuals is first come, first serve. Tables are $450 ($400 for members). Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available at the park. Call 794-3452 to reserve tickets. Dress is casual and children are welcome.

Proceeds from the event go toward future development and operation of the 100-acre Landmark Park on U.S. Highway 431 North in Dothan.
