One scarecrow incorporates the front end of a car; another an old motorcycle. “Enviroman” was molded by the Troy University Environmental Awareness Organization from Coke, Pepsi and Mountain Dew cans.
Then there’s the drunken chef.
The Scarecrows in the Garden featured 42 judged entries this year. Individuals, friends, families, businesses, non-profit groups and schools participated in the event that has been held by the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens for four years now.
Scarecrows are on display through Oct. 31. There’s no admission, and the gardens on Headland Avenue off U.S. 431 are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.
On Sunday, Oct. 12, the public is invited to come out between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. for refreshments and a chance to vote in a People’s Choice award for their overall favorite scarecrow.
In the meantime, here are the winners as selected by the gardens’ panel of judges:
- Funniest — “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Wine” by the Wiregrass Master Gardeners.
- Song — “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Ruth Rosentrater and Katrina Larsen.
- Most Original — “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” by Lewis-Smith Supply Corp.
- Scariest — “Hollowman” by the Dothan Runners Club.
- Famous Character — “Medusa” by the Wallace Community College English Club.
- School — “Wacky Riders” by Honeysuckle Middle School.
