Ala. resuming crackdown on drivers near big trucks

BIRMINGHAM (AP) — Alabama public safety officials say a crackdown on bad behavior by drivers when they encounter big trucks on the state’s highways will resume next month.

The Department of Public Safety says the statewide campaign to reduce the number of 18-wheeler crashes has resulted in state troopers writing more than 12,000 tickets so far, with 92 percent of those going to drivers of four-wheel vehicles.

The campaign covers seven weeks, including three weeks in September and October. The remaining four weeks will be in November and December. It is funded through a $650,000 grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which enforces commercial truck and bus regulations.

State troopers are focusing on the leading causes of highway crashes: speeding, tailgating, improper lane change and failure to signal lane changes.

If they made cops go the speed limit and they could be ticketed like us, the speeding would stop. Everyone would go the speed limit. Cops would see to it. Traffic laws are unlike any other laws we have. You can speed a little. They “let you” go 10 or 15 miles over the limit. What if you stole “just a little” from a bank? Or snorted just a little meth in Burger King? When you are pulled over, you are completely at their mercy. They can tear your car apart and lock you up for one mph over or let you drive away drunk. There should be a uniform set of laws for us all and take their badges and lock THEM up if they can’t enforce them to the letter. Oh, and no more free doughnuts.

Is thia article a joke?? Nothing is more noticeable driving here than that truck drivers rule the road, cutting people off, pulling out of intersections directly in front of on-coming traffic, and showing no regard for the lives of other drivers on the road. And the police are going to ticket private vehicles who might be a problem to them? This is laughable.

I want to know when the DOT will have a campaign to enforce themselves!! Twice in three months I have witnessed two different State Troopers performing what is known as (Instant On Radar) while traveling at a very high rate of speed OVER the speed limit. One of them had no destination cause to speed, because he turned around and pulled over a speeder going in the opposite direction. Instant on folks, is when they turn on the radar at the last second to read your speed in an attempt to defeat radar detectors. How is it safe to be traveling at 80+... YES 80 PLUS MPH in the left lane approaching slower traffic from behind while you have to “CALIBRATE” your radar detector periodically at those speeds to accurately monitor speeders in the opposite lane???? I mean something that passes you so fast it scares the snot out of you. I am not making this up people! What about the other law enforcement branches speeding up and down the 4 lane without a cause? I know some good cops out there who do not do this and who tell me this is wrong and should be reported. But, HOW?? Speed up behind the trooper, get his tag number and make a citizens arrest?? YEAH RIGHT GOMMER PYLE!!! It did not even work with BARNEY FIFE! But I know for a FACT I have witnessed two different state troopers acting in a way that puts them WAY above the law.  I say to the state of Alabama, that your little enforcement campaigns are for money, not public safety. If the state REALLY cared about public highway safety, they would PRACTICE it on the roadways by SETTING AN EXAMPLE! And yes, I DO have a radar detector and it is NOT illegal (yet) nor does it mean I am a speeder. I got it for situation awareness because I do not have cruise control and I got the second ticket of my life because I was doing 6 over the limit in a 65. Not in a hurry, just was not paying attention. I deserved the ticket and I paid it. Wonder if it was one of the troopers hauling butt while patrolling that got me back then. I have been driving for 29 years and I have never witnessed such arrogance and abuse of power on the open highway. You people in office who are responsible for your officers need to reel them in and set them strait if you want to maintain integrity and respect from the public. I used to despise people who flashed headlights warning about a speed trap ahead especially in the old days when cops set a better example. Now? I am not sure what to say or think. Perhaps THANK YOU to whoever flashed me? Maybe it is time to put something on cops cars that records the sound barrier speeds that they run when blue lights are not on. You know. POLICE THE POLICE.
