Geneva County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a Chancellor man Monday after he allegedly beat a 50-year-old man during an armed robbery at his Bellwood home, said Sheriff’s Investigator Ben Berry.

Investigators charged James Arthur Davis, 51, with first-degree armed robbery after he threatened another man with a handgun inside his home, and assaulted him, according to Berry. Davis was being held in the Geneva County Jail without bond.

The following happened during the robbery, according to Berry:

The robbery occurred after Davis approached Terry Maddox at his home on New Hope Road and asked him for $20. After Maddox refused to give him money, Davis followed him into the home, pulled a handgun on him and threatened to kill him.

“Mr. Maddox pushes him off of him, and they have a scuffle,” Berry said. “Maddox takes a broom and struck him a couple times in the hallway.”

Maddox’s attempt to defend himself with the broom was unsuccessful.

“Mr. Davis struck Mr. Maddox several times in the face with his fist, and Mr. Maddox collapsed to the floor,” Berry said.

Davis allegedly took about $2,200 in cash from Maddox’s pockets, then left the home. He was later arrested at a residence in Enterprise by Coffee County Sheriff’s deputies and Enterprise police.

The robbery happened around 4 p.m. in the Bellwood community about 10 miles from Geneva near the Coffee County line. Maddox was not seriously injured.
