Clayton teen faces charges in Henry County church burglaries
Henry County Sheriff’s deputies have charged a Clayton teenager with burglarizing two churches.
Investigator Troy Silva said he charged Caleb Benefield, 18, with two felony counts of third-degree burglary. Silva said a $5,000 bond was set for each burglary charge, but Benefield is already being held in the Barbour County Jail on unrelated charges.
Silva said Benefield confessed to the burglaries during an interview Monday. They involved two Henry County churches burglarized during October.
“He confessed to breaking into them and taking money out of them and drinks and Cokes and stuff like that,” Silva said.
Benefield was charged burglarizing the Mt. Zion Church on Henry County Road 31 in Abbeville and the Macedonia Church of God on Henry County Road 75 in Edwin, close to the Barbour County line.
Silva said more charges are pending in the ongoing investigation.
He said Benefield was out on bond for a felony receiving stolen property charge from earlier this year, also filed by Silva.
The Barbour County Sheriff’s Office assisted Henry County in their investigation.
