Dothan guardsman recovering after Fort Hood shooting
A Dothan national guardsman is recovering well after being shot twice at Fort Hood, Texas, during a deadly rampage at the post last week, according to his family.
Authorities said Maj. Randy Royer of Dothan was with about 270 other Alabama guardsmen at Fort Hood from the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command out of Homewood. The guardsmen were at Fort Hood on Thursday preparing for their deployment when Maj. Hasan Nidal Malik allegedly opened fire at the installation, killing 13 and injuring 31 others.
Royer’s nephew, Cameron Royer, said in an e-mail that his uncle was in stable condition on Monday and had moved from an intensive care unit to a recovery ward. He was shot Thursday through the arm and in the leg, just above the knee, and had to have surgery to put plates in his leg and arm to help the bones grow back together, according to Cameron Royer.
Cameron Royer said he flew back to Alabama on Sunday after being with Maj. Royer and family at Fort Hood.
“... Now I know he is okay ... ,” he wrote.
Cameron Royer said his uncle has served more than 20 years in the U.S. military.
