Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes said preliminary medical reports show an inmate at the Houston County Jail died from a bowel obstruction.

A statement released from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office said corrections officers found 28-year-old Jonathan Scott McCall around 4:30 p.m. Monday in his cell. He was reportedly found in what appeared to be a praying position.

Officers found McCall unresponsive and without a pulse and medical staff at the jail began CPR.

The statement said McCall was taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center where he was resuscitated.

Ben Earnest, a deputy Houston County coroner, said McCall was pronounced dead around 8 p.m. at SAMC.

According to the statement, McCall was booked into the Houston County Jail on April 28, charged with felony terrorist threats. He had been held without bond.

So well written Kit, your words are so true and I’d be willing to bet BIG MONEY that there will not be an investigation into this as this is the good ole boys at their best. You can see how the media portrayed this from the get-go, it’s sad and sickening actually.

I’ll begin by saying I didn’t know Scott.  I’m not even in Alabama—I’m writing this from Seattle, Washington.  I have no dog in this fight, so to speak, except a desire to see justice and the truth be served.

First of all, in leaving out the details that Scott was being treated for schizophrenia and that the “threats” in question were made by phone during an episode, they allowed the phrase “terrorist threats” to stand on its own. The average person reading this, not knowing the full story, will think to themselves that perhaps justice WAS done, that a terrorist died a horrible death—and perhaps even that society is better off for it.  Certainly the story is fishy, obviously there was a failure here on the part of the jailers to obtain medical attention for him, but the average person, given the impression that Scott was a “terrorist,“ would be far less inclined to call for an investigation into his last hours on Earth—regardless of whether that investigation is warranted.  Ask yourselves who you’d care more about: someone who was severely mentally ill and made a bad judgment call during an episode, or someone who was actually seeking to harm American citizens?  It’s not rocket science.

If Scott’s charges were pertinent to the story, would not also his ongoing mental illness—AND treatment—be as well?  What the Eagle has done in this case is about the same as saying someone is a “registered sex offender,“ without mentioning that the “sex crime” was something like getting caught urinating outside a bar because the bathroom line was too long.

Telling half the story is about as useless—and in this case, hurtful—as telling a lie. I’d be the first person to call for the head of an actual terrorist, believe me.  But I don’t believe Scott McCall was a terrorist, and I’m sorry that the Dothan Eagle only chose to tell the facts that portrayed him as one.

As for the investigation, there absolutely should be one.  Had an actual terrorist died at Gitmo from a bowel obstruction, there would have already been six different agencies down there causing the biggest ruckus since Lynndie England made a detainee wear his underwear on his head.

It is extremely sad that this man died in this manner.  The mentally ill are part of the forgotten people, i.e. the poor, homeless, elderly, etc.  This is just another example of where this country finds itself.  We can help huge conglomerates survive major decision making mistakes financially, but we can’t spend a few thousand to treat a helpless confused human being.  I am truly saddened by it all.  What will it be next I wonder.  I’m sure I’ll find out soon.

Having had a child sick with bowel obstruction in the past, I too know that this is not something that could have happened suddenly—this man had to be in SEVERE pain over the span of several days possibly a week, before it could have gotten to this point…the law enforcement agency should be investigated over this as this is tragic and what is sickening—is this backward system we have puts child molesters back on the street on bond to hurt other children (as was seen in Dale county recently) and then rather than send a mentally ill person where he can get help, they stow him away and apparently let him suffer unto death—this is horrific, there is no way this was something that “suddenly” happened—this is terrible.

Let me begin by saying that I have been by this family’s side during this. The first thing that should have been addressed when the media decided to write about Scott and his “terrorist threats” is that Scott was a person that had been diagnosed and was receiving medical care for paranoid schizophrenia. He was in a home for care for this when he was taken out to be put in a jail cell because of the phone call that he made during an episode. In the home, they had the medical knowledge to know how to handle Scott’s episodes, but he was put in a jail with obviously no proper medical understanding of Scott’s condition. Scott was not a horrible person, but just a misunderstood person and it is very sad that he had to lose his life due to the improper care that he received.

I too question how this prisoner could have died what is typically an excruciating death without having screamed out or requested some sort of help.  I too think that there should be an investigation into the circumstances.  I don’t question that he died of a bowel obstruction if the autopsy has shown that, but that he could have been saved possibly if he had been given medical attention earlier if he had asked for it.

I grew up with Scott McCall from elementary school until we graduated high school and I even knew him for some years beyond. For all this while I knew him to be a man with a good heart and I never saw wrong in him. While I do not know the details of his arrest I believe its out of all hands but God. I would call for investigation of Scotts rather suspicious death. A bowel obstruction would not come and bring death without Scott not alerting someone of his certain pain. Also, having respect for the family of Mr. McCall the Dothan Eagle could have attempted to attain a better photo of this man. Just because this man died in jail doesn’t mean he lived his whole life there and should not have been portrayed as if he did. I’m sure the family would have appreciated seeing him in a better photo.

This goes directly to the sheriffs department, not SAMC. As one who has experienced multiple bowel obstructions caused by a gastrointestinal disease, they didn,t suddenly find him unresponsive. It is severe and excruciating pain and I am certain the inmate was not simply “found in a praying position”, no way.Trust me, this inmate was loud and vocal with a bowel obstruction.

This situation needs an outside investigation. The information that has been released by the department does not add up.

Pinget its sounds to me you don’t know what a bowl obstruction is….Let me take the time to explain it to you…A bowel obstruction is a blockage in the intestines that prevents gas, fluids, or solids from moving through the intestines normally. Many different problems can cause a bowel obstruction, such as scar tissue from previous surgeries (adhesions), certain types of hernias, cancer, twisting of the intestines (volvulus), or diverticulitis….This had nothing to do with his appendix. Your appendix is located on the right lower quadrant of your abdomen. The only way to find a blockage like that is to do an xray of his abdomen. If your organs don’t recieve blood they die and in the end you die as well. This isn’t something that just happens over night.

Why did SAMC drop the ball here? This sounds like shoddy medical care. Pain in that area could be appendicitis; investigation would have revealed the bowel obstruction. There was no need for this man to die. This is a black eye for SAMC.
