Sex offender charged with failure to register
Houston County Sheriff’s investigators arrested a 37-year-old sex offender Wednesday on charges he failed to properly register.
According to court records, Investigator James Brazier charged Shelley Newton with giving law enforcement false information that he would be living in Tampa, Fla.
Newton is being held in the Houston County Jail on a $50,000 bond, which was set by District Court Judge Lori Collier Ingram.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety’s sex offender Web site, Newton was convicted of felony second-degree rape in 1994.
