Astronaut Capt. Winston E. Scott visits Girard Middle School
Girard Middle School recently hosted a special guest speaker, Capt. Winston E. Scott, U.S. Navy, retired, NASA astronaut. He completed two space missions.
Scott was reared in Miami in a largely segregated area. His education provided little access to resources, but his own determination combined with the dedication of his teachers set him on an inspiring path of achievement. Scott encouraged the students by saying if you apply yourself you can choose what you want to do with your life, if you don’t apply yourself, you’ll do what others want you to do.
The students saw a presentation of the process of training and going into space. He then entertained questions from the students. Winston Scott came to GMS through Educational Talent Search, directed by Dr. Charlotte Williams.
