Five Dothan City Schools will benefit from a donation of school supplies from local civic leaders.

The Southeast Alabama Community Foundation donated about $5,000 to help schools purchase paper, wipes, printer cartridges and other materials made scarce by recent budget cuts. Local vendors sold the materials at cost.

“The schools ended up with about $7,000 worth of product,” said Dennis Egge, of U.S. Business Products.

Recent budget reductions have eliminated the funds that teachers are reimbursed for buying school supplies and also cut principals’ discretionary funds. This has impacted schools’ ability to provide needed items like paper, markers, printer cartridges and the like.

Gayla White, a member of Dothan’s Tuesday Rotary Club, said the donation showed that Dothan has a community that is active and involved in the city schools.

The donated items will go to Dothan High School, Selma Street Elementary School, Grandview Elementary School, Honeysuckle Middle School and Cloverdale Elementary School. White said the materials were donated to some of the highest poverty schools in the district.

“We’re very grateful because we’ve all been trying to hang in there,” said Aneta Walker, Cloverdale Elementary School principal. “These are greatly needed supplies.”

Oh yea i meant to comment on the “No child left behind” law. All that law is accomplishing is dumbing down the education of our kids. Since a child with an IQ of 90 cannot learn at the same pace as a child with an IQ of 110 then the schools are forced to teach down to the one with the 90 IQ . Common sense will tell you that the kid with the 110 IQ is being cheated out of the education that he’s capable of acquiring. That was one of the most ignorant laws ever devised.

I have spent some time in public schools. I volunteered my time in my kids classes from kindergarten on up until they no longer needed my help. I pay property taxes also and own land also. We lived in Arizona for 9 years and paid property taxes there too. Check out the price of property taxes there! My kids went to public school there and it was a A+ school. Yes we brought paper towels and kleenex and supplies and watched while some did and some didn’t and everyone had the same chance. Some people just wait for the other person to do it and you call me selfish.

I totally agree with ms howard. Its not my responsibility as a taxpayer or a citizen to pay for someone elses childs education. I"ll pay for my kids and everyone else can pay for theirs. Either that or have a flat school tax so everyone in alabama pays the same amount each yr. It i want to donate money to charity then it should be my choice where to donate . The only fair way is a flat tax on everyone. Even adding an additional amount to sales tax to fund education isnt really fair . The man that makes more will naturally spend more and then hes still paying more than others.
If you want to call me selfish and uncaring then i guess i am . I didnt have other peoples kids and i dont think i should spend money to educate them   that i could be spending on my kids. It’s a fool that will take away from his own to give to someone else in my opinion. But under the present system i am robbed by the state to do exactly that. The only difference is they arent holding a gun to my head while they are robbing me.
If you dont mind paying tax to educate others then thats your business but i do mind it. Especially considering that public education has really went downhill in the last 20-30 yrs.
If a kids parents dont care about their education , then why the heck should i??
Jkj, some land owners might not mind paying the taxes but the ones i’ve been around are screaming over it . They believe just like i do . When you start spending as much on property tax as the state says they spend per student then you might feel the same way about it as we do. I know some people that spend over 100k a yr on property tax, i really dont know how much of that is just school tax but i’m sure its alot.Bottom line is i’m not rich but i sure as heck dont expect bill gates or warren buffet to pay my kids way thru school. Or take care of them in any other way .

To jkj
I do have a heart. You still don’t get
the point that its up to the parent to take care of their child and not someone else. My husband is overseas risking his life for his country so that you have the right to post your comment just like i have the right to post mine. He is working for his children and taking care of his children. Your just another bleeding heart liberal and that’s what’s wrong with this country.

Wpierce, I also wanted to straighten one thing out, you are NOT paying for my children to do anything.  I don’t have children, I was an educator for many years, which gives me the perspective of seeing many children in many situations.  Maybe you should spend the day in a public school classroom and get to know a couple of the kids, maybe then you won’t be so heartless toward and child.

I am absolutely horrified that adults in my community are so selfish and uncaring.  I understand that no one wants to “carry” anyone else, but does that mean we let children suffer because they have parents that do not care, it is not the fault of the child, but you are willing to let these children fall by the wayside because you just can’t be bothered to help anyone other than yourself.

Wpierce, you are insinuating that people that disagree with you and form a different opinion are not wealthy landowners, as you are.  I may not be wealthy, but I am a property in owner in both Coffee and Houston Counties.  My property taxes pay for children to go to school in 2 different places and I am ok with that.

Mrs. Howard, your sweeping generalities and false accusations are the reason that we have such problems, not only in our schools but also in life in general.  I do not believe in “No Child Left Behind”, I do, however, believe in children and their right to an education.  When did it become a 7-year-olds fault that his or her parents did not read to them?  That does not make your child “smarter” then they, it makes them fortunate to have the parents they have, other children are not so fortunate.  Stop trying to punish children for not being born into the family you feel they should have been.

The people who are commenting about not being as fortunate as some of the rich people are the same ones who believe in the No Child Left Behind.
If my kid is smarter than yours because
maybe his parents read to him and spent time teaching him than he should be able to move forward he shouldn’t have to wait on the others ones to catch up. Get the picture. It has nothing to do with how much money you have. It is noones responsibility but
the parents to send their kid to school and pay for that just like the parents to make them smart. I’m not rich either but I do pay for my kids in school and I don’t wait for anyone else to pay for them just like I don’t wait for anyone else to make them smart. Yes they go to a Houston county
school and not a private school but they apply theirselves and they don’t wait for a handout or someone else to do it for them.

amanning , i do have a problem with school taxes in their present structure. If they want to put a flat tax for schools thats the same for everyone then i’ll be more than happy to pay that flat tax.But for the state to tax my neighbor more than they tax me is wrong , just like it would be wrong to tax me more that they do you for example. The democratic views in this country are all wrong . They want to tax the rich to death and give it to the poor. Now why would anyone think that would be fair ? Obviously the rich man worked harder or got luckier than the poor man but thats the way the cards in life fall. Is it right to take it away from him and give it to someone else? Just cause you might have 3 tv’s in your house and the man across town cant afford one , then is it ok for the government to take one of yours and give to him? The principle is the same.

what i meant to say at the end of that last post is that is one thing i DO NOT have a problem paying taxes for.  CHILDREN AND EDUCATION

when i said people like me i was referring to property owners and the ones of us that buy 15-20 car tags a yr and everything else you can think of that theres a school tax on. I do send my grandkids to private school. I dont care what they do in public schools as long as they will stop taking my tax money to do it.Someone mentioned earlier about a voucher system. If the state is going to tax us then parents should get vouchers each month for tuition at the school of their choice. If they want to send their child to a school that cost more than the voucher then they would have to pay the difference. Wouldnt that be more fair to everyone ? As it is now some of us are paying alot more than parents that actually have kids in public school, in the form of taxes. I received tax statements last month and on just one piece of my property tax the school tax alone was 280.00 bucks. Thats what i mean by people like me—-the property owners!!!  i bought a tag for a 97 chev company truck last month the school tax on it was 18.40. Thats why i am unhappy with the way the schools are being managed. The state says they are spending close to 10k per yr per child. it only cost me about 6-7k for a private school. So why does it cost more at a public school to educate than it does a private school? The private school is there for a profit , provides a better education and does it cheaper !! Dont this seem like some kind of problem to you?
