Dothan Eagle collecting school uniforms

The Dothan Eagle is collecting school uniforms for the Dothan City Schools’ clothes closet.

The clothes closet is a collection of school uniforms the city school system is gathering to help students comply with the system’s new uniforms policy. The items collected in the clothes closet will be made available to students if they have a hygiene accident while at school or if their family is experiencing financial difficulty.

School principals and counselors will have the responsibility for identifying needs and retrieving items from the closet.

Folks who would like to donate uniform items to the city schools’ clothes closet may drop them off at the Dothan Eagle office on 227 N. Oates St. from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Eagle will collect clothes from today until July 31.

The clothes closet is in need of clothing of all sizes for students in grades preK- 12. The uniform policy dictates solid red, black, navy blue, white, maroon or gold tops or polos, and khaki pants or shorts. The clothes closet is also collecting underwear, belts and socks.

“I’d be happy if we could get five of every size,” said Teresa Wall, a Dothan City Schools resource specialist who is running the clothes closet.

Donations to the Dothan City Schools’ clothes closet are being inventoried and sorted by Cloverdale Baptist Church.

For more information, call Wall at (334) 714-8414.

Honestly, it won’t make a difference. Kids are programmed in this society to group up and label each other from very early. Now why would they do a thing like that? Well let’s see, take a look a mom and dad, TV, commercialism, and unrealistic expectations. Until this mentality stops, the idea that kids will get better with a uniform will probably not have the impact the schools are looking for. These behaviors are already established before a child enters schools. The sad part about the “bullying” epidemic we have here in America is nobody seems to really realize what the causes of it really are. More than likely a child that has family trouble or confusion will be the one that bullies. And in today’s world more and more families are broken and then using the education system as a way to escape their responsibilities to raising their own children. A whopping 30% of children
are bullied every year. So if a uniform solves this issue then I will be very surprised. Not to mention the “uniform” idea could be deemed as unconstituional.

I think this is wonderful!  MPowers, you honestly dont know how much easier your life would be if your children wore uniforms.  How much money have YOU spent having to buy NAME BRAND clothes just so your child is one of the “cool kids”??  Or how long has it taken your children to get ready becuase they dont know what to wear??  Uniforms help children become equals! No more “I’m cooler than you are becuase I wear Hollister!“  I personally, as a 20 yr old girl originally from Tampa Florida, who did NOT get to wear uniforms in my public school, think that ALL schools should go to uniforms.  Kids would complain, but they’d get over it.

Luckily, they don’t have to collect any uniforms for my kids, as they refuse to wear uniforms.

If you want uniforms, go to a private school.

If the PUBLIC schools make my kids wear uniforms, the school WILL be sued.
