Honeysuckle principal transferred to new job

A Dothan City Schools principal facing misdemeanor charges is being transferred to a job in the system’s central office.

Taylor police charged Patricia Slaughter, 58, of Alabama Highway 52, on May 17 with interfering with a governmental operation and resisting arrest. Slaughter was arrested at her home while Taylor police investigated her 28-year-old son, Jason Slaughter.

Police records indicate Patricia Slaughter was charged with obstruction for throwing a metal yard tool at a police officer. Records also show Slaughter was charged with intentionally attempting to prevent Officer Mike Stacey from arresting her.

After Slaughter’s arrest, she was placed on paid administrative leave. This action is consistent with school employment policy statewide, in which educators facing criminal charges are usually placed on administrative leave until the disposition of their cases. Tenured educators who are terminated can appeal their terminations, and are entitled to receive pay until their appeal is resolved. If they are fired and are acquitted of the charges against them or the charges are dropped, they could possibly sue the school system.

At a special meeting Wednesday morning, the city school board approved Slaughter moving into the open position of assistant director of exceptional student services. The position is being vacated by Carol Cunningham, who is moving up to become director of exceptional student services. Board members Brenda Guilford, Hays McKay and Gayla White were not present at the meeting.

Slaughter’s new job comes with a pay cut and Slaughter has also submitted her intention to retire in July 2011, when she becomes eligible for benefits.

Dothan City School Superintendent Sam Nichols said the move was in the best interest of the school system.

This is so wrong in many ways… The system is a complete FAIL. She needs to be fired and let out of the system.

I hope this position has been thought thru clearly. If a person gets so upset and rowdy, what makes you think that she will be able to work with special needs kids??!! They require alot more patience than she has shown to our FINE officers that try to protect our streets and counties. This is a woman that was living in the house with drugs and she is still being allowed to supervise our children? Thank GOD my children are in county schools. To Leroys comment- sounds like you have been on the wrong side of the law your self. If you are not present how do you know the officer was lying? If you do not know the officer involved I suggest you comment on another article.

shows what they think of special ed. they could keep her on administrative leave until trial is over…AEA says you have to pay them until convicted…not that they have to be at work…

“assistant director of exceptional student services”

How is a person who’s last photograph was in an orange prison jumsuit, now suddenly qualify to represent the school district on an administrative level?

What qulaifies her for this particular position? This is the same person who violates or convelutes every IDEA statue there is. Then would bully and release special education teachers who did not agree with “her interpretation” of the law.

With her in this position every parent of a special needs student should get an advocate to avoid her curt behaviors and protect your rights. The good old boy network is at work again.

She has’nt been convicted of anything yet. If you believe that a police officer does’nt lie or want lie, you live on another planet!

Thank goodness for AEA and Paul Hubbert! If not for them, we wouldn’t have even received the lowly $425 in classroom allocation money, which was still prorated in many school systems to $380.00. If not for AEA, teachers who are fausely accused - and it does happen- would be fired because that would be easier. It just kills me how people say she shouldn’t be around kids - and I don’t agree with what she did - but I don’t see her as a danger to students. Just look at who all gets to be parents! Talk about some people who don’t need to be around children! Get real! Tenure isn’t the problem when administrators document and do their jobs correctly. The state has procedures in place to protect students and teachers. Many times, more often that not, teachers are the ONLY advocates for the child. Teachers see it all from great homes to disrespectful students and parents. The teaching profession isn’t easy and it takes a special someone to do it with care and it deserves respect. No wonder kids don’t respect teachers - their parents don’t!
