Honeysuckle principal transferred to new job
A Dothan City Schools principal facing misdemeanor charges is being transferred to a job in the system’s central office.
Taylor police charged Patricia Slaughter, 58, of Alabama Highway 52, on May 17 with interfering with a governmental operation and resisting arrest. Slaughter was arrested at her home while Taylor police investigated her 28-year-old son, Jason Slaughter.
Police records indicate Patricia Slaughter was charged with obstruction for throwing a metal yard tool at a police officer. Records also show Slaughter was charged with intentionally attempting to prevent Officer Mike Stacey from arresting her.
After Slaughter’s arrest, she was placed on paid administrative leave. This action is consistent with school employment policy statewide, in which educators facing criminal charges are usually placed on administrative leave until the disposition of their cases. Tenured educators who are terminated can appeal their terminations, and are entitled to receive pay until their appeal is resolved. If they are fired and are acquitted of the charges against them or the charges are dropped, they could possibly sue the school system.
At a special meeting Wednesday morning, the city school board approved Slaughter moving into the open position of assistant director of exceptional student services. The position is being vacated by Carol Cunningham, who is moving up to become director of exceptional student services. Board members Brenda Guilford, Hays McKay and Gayla White were not present at the meeting.
Slaughter’s new job comes with a pay cut and Slaughter has also submitted her intention to retire in July 2011, when she becomes eligible for benefits.
Dothan City School Superintendent Sam Nichols said the move was in the best interest of the school system.

I agree about Gayla. I plan to vote for her come July. She does a good job.
i believe Gayla had her own children to get places that morning and requested the meeting be changed to 7:30 instead of 7 and did so at the previous board meeting..its all there in the minutes…but you can always pick up a phone and ask her yourself, teacher…you see that is another good thing about Gayla..she is always available to answer any questions someone may have….oh, and i guarentee she has not or will she ever write a letter or testify on behalf of a child molester or rapist…
anything else???
Why is she still around studets. She can be a custodian for all I care, just not one on one with any students. Just my opinion, I would not accept her being in charge of ANY students until this matter is over. And it is far from over.
EXCUSE ME!! My previous post should have read… Where were Guilford, McKay and Gayla White?
I feel that this was an important meeting. Where was Guilford, McKays, and Gayla White???? Gayla White seems to have time to rub noses with the politicians but not for THIS meeting.
I can just imagine (ha ha) the respect Slaughter will receive in this new position. The wonders she will do for DCS.
there is nothing wrong with nichols, nor the school board. there is nothing else they could do except let her sit at home and draw her salary. i prefer that she has to actually show up for work and do something. the problem is with AEA…they protect teachers at all costs. Recently it was reported that a teacher currently in prison for having sex with an under age student was still receiving salary. Thank AEA and Paul Hubbert for that. There is zero the school board or sam nichols can do until she is convicted or acquited.
no big surprise here…
anyone else think its time for sam nichols to go? his contract renewal will be left in the hands of our school board..please keep contacting them all and see that they make the correct decision…speak up folks or prepare for more of the same…
