Rifles twirled in near perfect synchronicity. The smack of hand to rifle made a single sound, although several students were handling the drill instruments. They measured and timed their steps to move as one unit, and as feet hit pavement, men in uniform watched closely, staring intently and making marks on their clipboard.

This was no normal day off from school for more than 200 students who competed Thursday in the annual JROTC competition at the Houston County Farm Center. JROTC units from seven schools were on hand to participate in several competitions including drill, color guard, general knowledge, and physical fitness.

These groups mean business.

Cadet Maj. Ashley Smith whipped her group from Dothan High School in line during the competition, reminding her cadets that although most of the group was on a break, they were expected to act in a “military manner.”

The discipline taught in the Dothan High program is one aspect that attracted junior Aaron Scobie. However, since joining the unit, Scobie said it has come to mean much more.

“It started out as a good way to get to college,” Scobie said. “Now I love everything about it. The instructors are great. The program helps you build character, and I’ve made tons of friends in ROTC.”

Scobie also said he wants to pursue an Army career after high school.

“The thought of going and serving my country, it just gives me an incredible feeling,” Scobie said.

The event was hosted by the local National Guard. SFC Robert Pietras, recruiter, said the event was a success.

“This event was a win-win for everyone,” Pietras said. “The National Guard got the opportunity to interact with the community, show support and be a positive role model for these students to follow. The students and schools received an opportunity to have a great time, interact with other students and compete at one of the larger JROTC competitions in the state, free of charge.”

Daleville High School edged Dothan High in a tiebreaker for the overall championship. Carroll High School placed a close third.
