ASHFORD—A small child was ejected during a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 84 near Ashford on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 84 and Old Highway 84 at about 3:05 p.m. A Nissan Murano driven by Sandra Lynn Blunt, 42, of Dothan, was headed westbound on U.S. 84 and struck a Ford Focus driven by Vanessa Lashay Pender, 28, of Gordon, who was crossing the highway on Old Highway 84.

According to the Alabama Highway Patrol, a 5-year-old child in Pender’s car was restrained, but a 3-year-old child was not and ended up being ejected from the car. Pender and the two children were taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The initial investigation indicates Pender failed to yield the right of way to Blunt.

My grand daughter has the same car seat as the pink one on the left side…I want to know if the child WAS restrained and just came out of the seat…I do not believe that a 3 year old could undo those buckles they have on those car seats…not on her own…the five year old could maybe, but those things are pretty tough…
My concern is was it a design flaw in the seat or was the child loose in the car?
How ‘bout we ban redneck baseball cap wearin’ tobacco spittin’ giant pick up truck drivin’ MEN drivers first?
Or maybe those weirdo’s who drive the little crotch rocket motorcycle’s that sound like gnats as they shoot by you at a hundred miles an hour…
Then we can move on to the “blue hairs” that drive twenty miles under the speed limit in the left lane of traffic, cos they have to turn left SOMEWHERE DOWN IN FLORIDA…
And let’s not forget to ban the people under 25…get them and their texting sexting cell phone talking mascara fixin’ b.u.t.t.s off the roads!
And everyone who NEVER uses a turn signal.
And everyone who has no concept of what a yield sign ACTUALLY MEANS…
Have I covered everyone?

I hope you are joking.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that car seats are 100% safe. The only 100% safe bet is having kids ride huddled in the floorboard or trunk. If you want to be truly safe, not letting women drive would be a good start.

My apologies, I’m at work and the video link won’t play for me. The point of my post was, and still is, the child should have been in a seat. I have a daughter and I know that children can be frustrating but my opinion stands.

Watch the RSN video and you will see that there were two carseats.  A black one in the right rear and a pink one in the left rear.

I understand that… From the picture on RSN there is only one car seat in the car. A five year old might be better equipped to deal with a regular seatbelt than a car seat and put the three year old in the seat. I just couln’t imagine something happening to my daughter because of my own negligence.

Have you ever dealt with a 3 year old in a car seat? The child could have easily unbuckled its self with out the mother knowing. I just cannot see why she would buckle her 5 year old in a car seat and not her 3 year old . Just remember there is always more to a story ....

This makes me sick that this woman didn’t have the common sense to restrain a 3 year old in her vehicle.
