Alabama to get $3 billion despite opposition
Published: February 14, 2009
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama stands to get about $3 billion from a federal economic stimulus package that was opposed by eight out of nine members of the state’s delegation in Washington.
Congress wrapped up work on the $787 billion package Friday night. Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham cast the lone yes vote from Alabama.
The state’s two new Democratic representatives, Bobby Bright of Montgomery and Parker Griffith of Huntsville, were among seven Democrats in the House who opposed the package. Alabama’s four Republican representatives and two Republican senators voted against it.
The National Governors Association and National Conference of State Legislatures estimate Alabama’s portion of the package at about $3 billion.

If they are wise, they won’t spend the money but invest it somehow. I have a feeling they are going to spend it on salaries.
I agree with rodogo!
Why didn’t Bobby Bright just run as a Republican? That would be better than being a Republican dressed in a Democrat’s suit. I understand his reasoning for voting against the stimulus bill. However, I cannot understand why he voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which allows employees to sue their employers for discriminatory pay disparages. Bobby Bright, come out of the closet.
You three are really something, you’re the type that lives your whole life on credit. Everything you make goes right back to the company store. That is really smart! Writing checks on our kid’s future is one thing I’ll say Bobby Bright was bright about, HE VOTED NO!
-To indebting our kids to a life time of slavery to the Federal Government.
-To signing away our children’s future so we can have it easier.
-To devalueing our dollar in the world market.
-To financing our debt to Communist china!
You guys are real peaches, that’s all I can say!!!
I voted for Bobby Bright. I am a life long Democrat. I am beginning to think that there are no “real” Democrats that run for office in Alabama. What we get are Republicans, and so called Democrats, that are in fact “GOP Lite”. Case in point—in voting straight Democrat since arriving in Alabama in the 1970s, I voted for Senator Shelby. But all of a sudden one day he woke up and “realized” he should be a Republican. We also had a local Enterprise town cleark, who switched parties, from the Democrats to the GOP.
Will “real” Democrats start running for office in Alabama? Bobby Bright better start voting like a Democrat, instead of getting in lock step with the Republicans, or this first term of his will be his last.
The Democratic Party is just like the people getting earned income tax money!
The majority thinks only about spending
until its all gone, never thinking what their needs are only their wants.
I promise the nearly trillion dollars will not help the economy one bit, rule of thumb “You cannot borrow you way out of debt”. We have a bunch idiots trying to run us into socialism and doing a good job of it!
A very negative partisan vote by the Republicans and a few Democrats did not stop the economic recovery package from passing. This negative voting included our own Rep. Bright. According to Mr. Bright, his surveyed constituency was also against the passing of this bill. In the spirit of fair play, the Republican States such as Alabama and others, esp. Alabama, have an opportunity to show the true spirit of altruism. The funds that will be made available for Alabama through this program should not be accepted, but instead these monies should be put in an account to alleviate the total cost of the program. It is time they walk the talk. We sure do not want to be seen as hypocritical…do we? This tactic together with the Republicans pundits that are spewing words of failure for Pres. Obama will insure the Republican a platform to run on in 2010 and 2012. Hold it…now I understand that Gov. Riley has already hired a law firm to administer this program which Alabama was against in the first place even before the bill was passed. Duh!
