A hand-drawn picture of an American Flag hangs on one of the doors, along with Jason Smith’s name plate. His daughter, Kate, drew it for him and Jason loved it.
It is the way the workers there have chosen to remember Smith, who passed away Saturday after a long fight with cancer. He was 37.
Smith was an assistant district attorney for Houston and Henry counties, drawing respect from coworkers, judges, opposing counsel, and his boss.
“You never saw Jason when he was not positive,” District Attorney Doug Valeska said. “He never used his illness as an excuse. He was an inspiration to everyone around him. He always wanted to work, and he did work as long as he possibly could.”
Flags at the Houston County Courthouse and Sheriff’s office will be flown at half staff through Tuesday in honor and memory of Smith.
Smith is survived by his wife of 14 years, Kim Brantley Smith, and two children, Kate, 6, and Gabe, 2.
Smith played baseball at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, and received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law in Montgomery. He was a member of the Alabama State Bar Association, the Alabama District Attorneys Association, and a member at Covenant United Methodist Church in Dothan.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Covenant. The family requests In lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Jason Smith to the building fund of Covenant United Methodist Church.
