Hell came to Samson Tuesday in the form of a deranged gunman whose killing spree left 10 victims dead before he turned a gun on himself.
The gunman, identified by eyewitnesses and a former high school classmate as Michael McLendon, 27, began his mad, violent rampage in Kinston, where one victim was found dead in a burned house, according to authorities.

Victims of the Geneva County Shooting
McLendon then went to Samson where he rampaged through a neighborhood, killing four adults and a 1-year-old child at one residence, and two other people at nearby homes. A 3-month-old infant was also injured in the shootings.
He then went on a random shooting spree through Samson, shooting and killing a woman at a Big Little store on State Highway 52 and another victim at Samson Pipe and Supply.
McLendon also opened fire on Bradley TrueValue Hardware store. Luckily, no one was injured.
“We were just business as normal and all of a sudden there were bullets flying and glass was everywhere,” owner David Bradley said. “We realized what it was and grabbed our guns but then he was gone.”
After McLendon left Samson he fled to Geneva, where he encountered law enforcement officers. Geneva County deputies rammed the suspect’s Mitsubishi Eclipse in front of Alabama Title Loans on State Highway 52, near Wal-Mart.
Gunfire was exchanged and Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey was shot in the shoulder, though his wound was not serious. A chase then continued to Reliable Products where McLendon took his own life.
The children and one of the adults were the family of a Geneva County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The deputy was one of the officers who pursued McLendon to Reliable.
“This is probably the worst thing that’s happened in my career,” Sheriff Greg Ward said. “...While the shootout was going on at Reliable, he had no idea what had happened to his family.”
“You wanna talk about a horrific scene…”
Alina Knowles, her father-in-law Tom Knowles and Barry Aplin were at a house on Pullum Street next door to the residence where five people were killed when the shootings took place.
Aplin heard McLendon shooting and saw him chase a woman into a nearby residence and open fire.
“I saw him in the living room just blazing the world up,” Aplin said.
Knowles said she saw McLendon open fire on her neighbors and their guests who were sitting on the front porch.
“You wanna talk about a horrific scene, you see what I saw. I went over to get that baby, and there was blood all over that porch,” Alina said, referring to the child who survived the shooting. “The baby was covered in her mother’s blood.”
Unanswered questions
Authorities have yet to establish many of the facts of the shootings. Alabama State Trooper Kevin Cook said investigators have established more than 10 different crime scenes in McLendon’s spree. Authorities have yet to identify the victims in the shooting. Eyewitnesses have identified them, but the Dothan Eagle is awaiting next-of-kin notification to release the names.
Aplin said one of the victims was one of his best friends.
“I ain’t sleeping tonight,” Aplin said. “That was my best friend just gone.”
Also unknown at this time is McClendon’s motive for killing.
Cecil Knowles, Alina’s husband, wasn’t at home when the shootings happened, but said McLendon was related to some of the victims and was a frequent guest in the neighborhood.
“I went to high school with him and thought he was a cool guy,” he said. “I don’t know what tipped his lid.”
Jerry Hysmith, a Samson resident, said he had worked with McLendon at Reliable and found him shy, but agreeable.
“He never said anything out of the way to me or anyone,” he said. “He had a great mother and came from a good family.”

Dubai-bound, to answer your question that you posed to Justpeachy, those people throwing fits are no different than a brat in the store with a parent that wont light their behind up for acting out…spoiled brats! Yes, people would think twice about being bully style spoil brats, and that is what they really are, if they know that they cannot push anyone around, or get away with anything crazy. Just like that spoiled brat of a kid in the store would shut his freaking mouth up if the parents would discipline him!
Excuses, excuses! No one is responsible for their own behavior, and parents are not responsible for their children, and people don’t kill people, guns do…
Please…
The gun was just the tool of choice… This guy could have used any number of gruesome methods to accomplish his killing spree… My wife and I never owned a handgun up until about 6 months ago… I finally decided it was more irresponsible NOT to have one… Now I carry one, she carries one, and my older kids know how to handle one… We got permits to carry and the whole family went through a firearms safety course… Take one of those courses… You won’t ever wear rose colored glasses again… I’m not violent, but I refuse to stand by and allow myself or my family to be victimized…
Dubai-bound, First, Fight for freedom shouldn’t need to ask for ANY “rules” or “laws” to be relaxed, because the 2nd amendment is quite clear on the matter!
‘...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.‘
You cannot be anymore clear than SHALL NOT…fight 4 freedom is 100% correct, and so is justpeachy!
A gun in your home where it belongs? According to whom? Where is that in the constitution…this is what is wrong with America right now at this very moment! All you see now days is “Wisdom of the founding fathers and the God given rights in the constitution be damned…we can do what we want, and our opinion is worth more…I don’t have to know why it is better, or if it really even is, just that I have it…“
Come on…
Justpeachy: When people carried guns it was the Wild West and people were dying because of stupid bar room fights that got out of hand. Most people are average to below average intelligence. Do we honestly want everyone carrying a weapon? Have you ever seen those crazy people that freak out because their order is messed up or they are irritated standing in line and they flip out? Do you want these people carrying guns? If we say “everyone carries a gun,“ does that make anything safer? No!
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims.
I would like to address genevawoman’s and fight 4 freedom’s posts.
I keep a gun in my home, where it belongs. I don’t see a point in carrying a weapon with you. I do not believe in gun control. The only thing that happens when you take guns away is that only the criminals will have them. (What could be worse?)
genevawoman: the GUN did not kill these people; the man with a gun killed these people. This man is the problem, not the weapon of choice. Everyday people are killed by all sorts of weapons. Place the blame where it belongs.
fight 4 freedom: The answer isn’t relaxed rules on carrying a weapon; the answer is more police officers that are better trained and better paid. Remember, if you take an eye for an eye, where does the cycle end?
Genevawoman, I do not agree. These people were killed by a maniac, psycho with no excuse for what he did. Consider the reality, and not the emotion and reflex reaction induced by this horrific and cowardly act. Car Crash Stats:
Consider this info: There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States—one death every 13 minutes.
Nearly 43,000 killed in automobiles! Should we ban automobiles? No? Why not? Because the inherent benefit derived from automobiles far out-ways the negative. Before you decide that guns should be banned in “your” infinite wisdom, compare your wisdom with the founding fathers wisdom. The felt so strongly about the 2nd amendment, that the 2nd amendment is 2nd, only behind freedom of the press so we know when to prepare our Guns! Don’t sacrifice your GOD GIVEN rights for a false feeling of security. If someone wants to kill another person, or even many people, they will find a way, and the only one that might be able to stop them would be a regular citizen with a gun! just my opinion.
To Genevawoman; saying these people were killed with a GUN, like the gun did it, is ignorant. An obviously insane individual killed these people. The fact that he did it with a gun was unfortunate. Saying the gun killed the people is like saying the pen mispelled the word. Ma’am, with all due respect, the gun was merely the instrument of destruction by a deranged man. If he had not had a gun, it would have been a butcher knife. Personally, I think we should all carry guns. That way, no one would mess with anyone. Why do you think they call them peacemakers?
I’m all for freedom, but these people were killed with a GUN!
as tragic as this is, it does point out the fact that we need to shut up the ones calling for stronger gun controll. it needs to serve as a sign that we need to lighten up the rules, make it easier to carry a weapon. if someone had a gun on them today, it could have ended sooner with less bloodshed. taking away gun owners rights will only make this scene replay over again, in some other town, on some other day. harri ann, please fight for my right to carry a gun to protect myself and family. my prayers are with all involved, and its time for the law observing public to fight for our rights to preserve and protect.
My heart and prayers goes out to famlies of the loved ones that where lost in this horrible time! This is one reason I will not move back to Alabama!
