County repairs more roads after floods

The Houston County Road and Bridge Department is currently working to repair a washed-out portion of Crawford Road in Cowarts.
Houston County’s road and bridge department continues to plug away at roads damaged by heavy rain and floods that happened in late March and earlier this month.
“Our guys have worked long hours and every weekend except Easter,” said Mark Culver, Houston County Commission chairman.
The county released a list on Monday of nine roads that remain closed. Thirty-five roads have been closed at some point since the rains.
Culver said the list of opened and closed roads will continue to fluctuate as some roads that are currently open will close for repairs.
Culver said all roads would likely be repaired in six to nine months. The total cost of the repair work will fall between $5 million and $12 million.
County officials are awaiting the results of a FEMA assessment to find out whether the county qualifies for federal assistance in making repairs.
“These kind of things are the reason we keep a reserve in the budget every year,” Culver said.
