Flooded rivers remain a concern for Dale, Geneva and Covington counties
The torrential rains that brought heavy flooding throughout the Wiregrass on Saturday may be gone, but some areas are still in danger of more flooding for the next couple of days.
The National Weather Service’s (NWS) flood warning is in effect until Tuesday evening for the Choctawhatchee River near Newton. As of 10:30 a.m. today, the river was at 23.3 feet and minor flooding was occurring near Newton and is expected to continue until the river recedes. If it reaches 24 feet, moderate flooding will occur and affect stores and apartments near state Highway 92, eight miles downstream.
The flood warning continues until late Tuesday night for the Choctawhatchee River near Geneva. At 11 a.m. today, the River was at 30.4 feet. Moderate flooding is occurring and will continue. Flood stage is 23 feet. The river is expected to continue rising to near 31.4 feet by this evening, then fall below flood stage Tuesday before midnight.
The NWS is reporting about 30 homes outside the levee are flooded.
The rising Choctawhatchee River is and will continue to cause moderate flooding further downstream at Caryville, Fla., and in the Florida counties of Holmes and Washington.
The NWS suggests the following: “Everyone with interest along the Choctawhatchee River should monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take necessary precautions to protect life and property. Do not drive cars through flooded areas. If you see flood waters, remember to turn around and do not drown.”
Covington County has four areas of concern for more flooding.
The flood warning for the Blackwater River near Baker continues until Tuesday afternoon. At 9 a.m. Sunday, the river was at 21.3 feet and moderate flooding was occurring and will continue. Flood stage is 11 feet, and the NWS predicts the river will rise to 21.6 feet by this afternoon. The river should fall below flood stage Tuesday morning.
The flood warning for the Conecuh River at Brewton will continue until Thursday afternoon. At 8 a.m. today, the river was at 24.2 feet. No flooding is occurring at this moment, but the NWS predicts minor flooding will occur as the river is expected to rise to 27.5 feet by early Wednesday morning. Flood stage is 27 feet.
The flood warning for the Conecuh River at River Falls continues until late Tuesday night. At 8 a.m. today, the river was at 18 feet. No flooding has occurred, but minor flooding is predicted as the river is expected to rise to 37.3 feet by early Tuesday afternoon. Flood stage is 37 feet. The river should fall below flood stage by midnight Tuesday.
The Yellow River at Milligan was at 13.4 feet at 9 this morning, and minor flooding is occurring. Flood stage is 12 feet. The flood warning continues through Tuesday evening as the river will continue to rise to 16.7 feet by Monday morning. Moderate flooding is expected. The river threatens homes on Ellis and Antioch roads when it reaches 13 feet. The river should be below flood stage Tuesday afternoon.
