Gubernatorial candidate to call out Riley on bingo issue

A Republic candidate for governor plans to call out Gov. Bob Riley Thursday on his stance on electronic bingo.

Bill Johnson of Prattville will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. at the entrance to the Country Crossing development, located about five miles south of Dothan on U.S. 231 South.

In a press release sent out Wednesday night, Johnson officials said the candidate will discuss his views on Country Crossing and his concerns that Mississippi Indian casino owners could be influencing Riley to choke off economic development in the Wiregrass.

On his Web site, Johnson says he is against gambling but would “allow the citizens to vote to tax and regulate the gambling that already exists in Alabama.“

The multi-million dollar development Country Crossing was first unveiled in February 2008 as a Branson, Mo.-like country music entertainment destination which would be financed through a charitable electronic bingo component. While there was strong initial objection to the bingo aspect, the fervor died down somewhat until last December when Riley created an anti-gaming task force to crack down on illegal gaming in the state.

County commissioners and the sheriff received Attorney General Opinions prior to announcing the development, regarding the legality of the project.

Riley has said he supports the development itself, but has not committed either way as to whether he believes the bingo aspect is legal or not. He has championed recent court rulings as the definitive answer on electronic bingo. One of the rulings was handed down by Riley’s cousin.

More than a dozen counties have bingo regulations; all are specific to those counties. Country Crossing officials have said one ruling, such as in Walker County recently, does not have a bearing on the local development.

Johnson’s comments today may be based in part on a 350-plus page document on the Jack Abramoff Indian Scandal presented in 2006 by the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, which alleges millions of dollars were transferred from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, part of which went to influence the outcome of the Alabama gubernatorial race when Riley was first elected.

Abramoff regularly received funds to influence lawmakers or block legislation that would have expanded gaming in Alabama. Casino interests wanted to keep casino-style games from going into dog tracks in Alabama, and money was also paid to influence the Christian Coalition and other religious groups to help block the lottery as proposed by former Gov. Don Siegelman.

For the most part, the governor has dodged discussions on the project. At an appearance before the Dothan Rotary Club last month, he took only one question on gaming from the media.

Last week, Riley’s deputy counsel called the Nevada Gaming Commission, in what Country Crossing developers and local officials believe was an effort to block the shipment of the 1,703 bingo machines preparing to ship to Houston County.

Country Crossing is supported by a number of local businessmen, politicians and chamber and tourism officials and is seen as the second largest economic development project in the state. It is a three-phase project, with Phase I set to open Dec. 1 with about 600 employees.

Last week locals rallied in support of the project in an event led by County Commission Chairman Mark Culver. Culver, a long-time Republican, is at odds with the governor over the project, as are some members of the local legislative delegation and other long-time Republican supporters.

Johnson has been a Riley supporter and was in Riley’s Cabinet, first appointed in 2003 as assistant director for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA). In 2005, Riley appointed Johnson director of the agency. He resigned in June to run for governor. Johnson’s wife, Kathy, heads the Alabama Broadband Initiative for Riley.

Bob Riley in his office thinking only about CC and Gilley rubbing his hands over and over laughing muhahahahahahahah!  You guys are really out there! No one cares about CC just the illegal bingo casino and the push to only let certain people in Alabama to get rich.  Gilley’s sweet home alabama vote would have made a monopoly for only a few.  Vote on it is fine but vote on a bill that is not a stacked deck for four or five people in the state.  That ain’t freedom when only a few get to be rich.

I just dont understand a few things…

A) Why cant the people of Alabama decide if we want to legalize it, and mkae money off of it? I see articles everyday about this town and that town are doing this and doing that trying to keep from having to lay off city employees and teachers. Somebody somewhere in this state is making a killing off the illegal gambling, and illegal bingo… might as well legalize and lets fix our budgets.

B) Why cant we have some decent politicians who do whats best for the people, not what there friends want..

C) why doesnt Bob go after Milton up at Victory land? they have open sports betting and slot style machines? Who or What does he know about Riley that keeps him away?

I dont care what your stance is on bingo, gambling, lottery etc…

you have to agree that the right thing to do, is to let us decide. This is how our government was set up, to let the people be the voice.

If you are against it.. then vote against it, if you are for it, then vote for it.

If it passes, great, more jobs and more money for our area, and the areas around the state. If you dont like it or agree with it, then simply dont visit it.

I am not for nor am I against bingo, lottery, gambling etc…I am however for letting the people decide, and I am in favor of the creation of Jobs. Especially in this time period.

Yeah, how dare the newspaper pass along information about something going on in the community!? The nerve!  Unlike other people who have posted, I would be upset if the newspaper did NOT post this. This is a HUGE project and there is a HUGE statewide controversy going on here. Just because the media covers something doesn’t mean they are promoting it. News happens and I expect to read about or watch it on TV!

The Dothan Eagle is reporting the news. As with a television remote that with one click one doesn’t have to see or hear what is showing, either go listen or stay away. Information should be validated and published, then let the people decide. Country Crossings is progressive and dinosauers don’t like change. And, roaches don’t like the light turned on. let’s see what the light produces.

ummmm….yeah…..Governor Riley sits in his office every day and thinks about how he can screw Dothan and Country Crossing.  News flash folks….everything is not about country crossing ... not all day every day….. get that chip off your shoulder.

dothanfive, if riley thinks he can stop CC from opening then he better be worried. I’m sure he’s not worried about the money he’s received from special interest groups. I be willing to bet there’s no paper trail to follow to prove it. Siegelman and Scrushy taught people the hard way about leaving paper trails. I suspect riley learned well too.

believe me…..i am anything but nervous about johnson’s comments.  the guy has quite an interesting history to say the least.  he needs some publicity and the Eagle will certainly give it to him.  But this guy has zero chance of being governor….zero.  So let the CCrossing zealots begin with their normal praise of those that agree with them (troy king, ron sparks) regardless of their rationality and the outright hatred of those that disagree (bob riley, jimmy holley).  The whole world does revolve around CCrossing after all….doesn’t it?  So says the great almighty Gilley…..
And just to note, this whole “Riley is influenced by Indian casino money” is a crock.  It has been around for years and investigated numerous times and not once had anything unsavory been found.  But review and trash him a little more….I don’t think Riley is exactly worried…nor should he.

You have got to be kidding me.  This Johnson person wants to do his press conference in front of Country Crossing.  This state has more pressing issues than Country Crossing.  Wonder if gilley is backing him…wouldn’t surprise me.  Enough about Country Crossing.  We don’t need to read about it every day.  If Johnson thinks this will help him win an election…he is so wrong.  And I am starting to wonder if gilley doesn’t own the Dothan Eagle.  We all have different opinions on this but I’d like to read the paper one day without having gilley, country crossing or bamajam always something on the front page.  There are so many other things that could be and should be covered.  The above mentioned is not news.  It’s a bunch of men fighting like little children and gilley throwing a tantrum until he gets his way….taking over all of the SE.  His ego is huge and we are sick of seeing him and reading about him.  He’s like an unwanted squirrel in your attic.
