Southeast Alabama Medical Center spokesman Steve Pearce told the Associated Press early this morning that injured Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy Ted Yost remains in critical condition. Yost underwent surgery Friday night after suffering gunshot wounds in a shootout with suspect Fred Davis in the Granberry’s Crossroads community near Headland.
Headland Police Officer Dexter Hammond was killed by the 53-year-old Davis when he arrived at the scene following an emergency call to the Henry County Sheriff’s Department of a weapon being fired outside Davis’ trailer at 4:55 p.m.
Davis then shot Yost and fired at several other deputies. Davis was then shot and killed by officers responding to the scene at Davis’ home at 5501 County Road 55.
Alabama State Troopers Public Information Officer Kevin Cook said the motive for his shootings is still unknown.
