Country Crossing venues announced
Country Crossing groundbreaking ceremony
Country Crossing groundbreaking ceremony
Traffic slowed to a crawl on Highway 231 Monday, as passers-by craned their necks at the 1,000+ cars parked on a strip of pasture.
It was just a groundbreaking ceremony, but still enough to prompt the occasional motorist to pull over and ask just what was going on at this rural piece of property just north of the Florida state line.
If a little curiosity can pull a handful of people off a U.S. highway, local developer Ronnie Gilley believes Country Crossing can easily become a tourist destination for the masses.
Seven months after Gilley and the Houston County Commission signed an agreement to place the mega-entertainment project in Houston County, a handful of officials, dignitaries and “common folk” turned the first shovels of dirt at the proposed site.
Country music played from the loud speakers, volunteers passed out barbecue, the American flag ruffled in the stiff breeze and pageant queens paraded through the crowd. There was a lot of Nashville and a little bit of Hollywood there, but the event was decidedly Wiregrass.
Gilley said he hopes to open the first venue — a family restaurant bearing the name of country music artist Tracy Lawrence — in nine months.
Other venues will follow, Gilley said, including themed restaurants sponsored by country music artists John Anderson, Lorrie Morgan and George Jones. An electronic bingo center expected to help fund the project will go up soon thereafter, along with a hotel, amphitheater and many other attractions.
There was one surprise at the ceremony. Oscar award winning actor Jamie Foxx appeared on stage, announced his involvement in the project and even entertained the crowd of more than 1,000 with his spot-on impersonation of Ray Charles.
But the theme of the day was jobs. Gilley said he expects Phase 1 of Country Crossing to employ between 700 and 1,000, and more than 5,000 when the site is fully developed. Gilley called it southeast Alabama’s “economic stimulus package.”
“It’s a very, very sluggish economy right now to say the least,” Gilley said. “We have something here that’s going to bring jobs to the Wiregrass. You just sort of have to overlook all the rhetoric and negative dialogue and move forward.
“Starting right now, we are moving forward. There’s no going back. This project will happen,” Gilley said.
Stella Calloway arrived at the groundbreaking site more than two hours early to get a seat on the front row. She moved here from Orlando about two years ago and said she looks forward to seeing all of the country music acts at Country Crossing.
“And of course it will bring jobs here,” Calloway said.
And what about the gambling?
“I understand people that might be against it, but if you don’t want to gamble, don’t go then,” she said.
Jim Delman sat near Calloway, hoping to catch a glimpse of George Jones. Delman said he doubted Jones would remember him, but he drove Jones to the Seattle airport after an impromptu meeting “about 40 years ago.”
“Fine fella. easy to talk to,” said Delman, who moved here from Tampa a few years ago.
Gilley said heavy equipment will begin moving dirt next week while planners complete a plat plan for the land.

Bingo, I personally love the idea of CC. I think we should add in some card tables and a state lottery as well. I do not have a problem with Gilley’s success, it is just the road he took to get there. If you are ok with someone giving you the run-around, then more power to you. If you change your mind about something, then don’t lie about it to the people who have signed into a legal contract with you. And don’t tell the media about it before you tell those you have plans with. He has messed around with some people with a lot of pull in this town. Its never good to burn your bridges. Again, I can’t wait for CC to open!
Hey DothanDirt or is this possibly MediaRen..oh nevermind…what does it matter…this name is appropiate because the dirt will come in handy to bury you in that grave you’re digging for yourself. If you are the ol’ renegade, does your bosses at WD…Better not say that yet either…:), but I still wanna know if they know you’re setting them up to take a fall? I doubt it. They will though. I get a kick out of all the losers who continually want to cut down Ronnie Gilley because of pure jealousy. I bet he loves the fact that his name eats at all you naysayers guts as much as you talk about him..lol..Country Crossing is coming and I love how it hurts each of you who are against it..haha…As far as you Tabby…I don’t think Jamie Foxx gives a rat’s behind if you go to his movies or not…hahaha…Oh and I’ve lived here all my life and Ronnie is one of the kindest guys I know. As far as meeting our maker…those who pass judgement on others will also meet him..which means you, because only God can pass judgement, and you’re NOT God…Have a great day..![]()
Anyone who has lived here long enough knows about Gilley and saying the truth is not slander. Of course, I won’t go to Country Crossing. I won’t go to anything that Gilley has a part in/of because I won’t give money to someone like him. I won’t purchase anything of anyone who supports him…and now Jamie Foxx will not get any money out of my pocket for any of his movies. It doesn’t matter that me being only one person is doing this…I have to do what I believe is the right thing. I am not impressed by what Gilley does at all. He is self-centered and arrogant and I have the right to my opinion…the same that you do who support him. He loves all the attention…good or bad. If he can sleep well at night, good for him. But we all meet our maker one day and you can’t lie to Him…He knows the complete truth…along with many others here on earth.
The proof will soon be on www.dothandirt.com
Inquizative, I have the proof that gilley is a swindler and a liar. he makes all of his supporters look like idiots
dothanfive, a question for you. Did Ronnie Gilley “swindle” you? If so, prove it and sue him!
In the mean time what you say is pure deformation of character, which opens the door for a law suit against you.
Personally I’ve seen nothing but greatness from Ronnie Gilley, his inspiration, his kindness, his determination against so many odds to bring good things to the Wiregrass by means of jobs, higher incomes to workers, higher incomes to the counties of the Wiregrass, higher incomes to the City of Dothan, higher incomes to everyone even indirectly involved.
What do you, dothanfive, have against anyone that can make such a huge difference in the local economy, especially during these difficult times?
all you people that doesn’t care about country crossing and Ronnie Gilley why are you so concern about such and even waste your time blogging.
I’m very glad to see something come in to Alabama and not have to drive to FLA like all the rest of the nuts and spend my money there.. Keep the money here.. You can only get took if you want took.
I wonder how you can tell, wiregrass voter, that I am in fact new to Dothan? Was that meant to be degrading? I wonder if you sir or maam are the voter that put in office some of the clowns you have here? Gilley is a smart man who is looking to bring jobs and a fun experience to Dothan. Dont pass judgment on someone less you be judged Sir or maam. Make a difference in your world and if you dont like the way others live then dont go around them. I bet your an Obama bin laden fan as well.
Lorrie Morgan justed filed bankruptcy…a sign of the future for Country Crossings???
