No timeline for Dale commissioner appointment
OZARK - Monday was the first time in a while that only three Dale County commissioners sat at a table to make decisions. Gov. Bob Riley’s press secretary, Todd Stacy, said there is no set time table to appoint a fourth after the death last week of Commissioner Glenn Grantham.
Grantham was elected to his sixth term as commissioner last year. A little over three years is left in his term.
Stacy said Riley would appoint someone to Grantham’s seat “as soon as possible” and that an easy way to complete the process was if applications and nominations were submitted via the governor’s Web site.
It was not known if any applications or nominations had been submitted as of Monday.
“The people of that district have got to be represented. The most important aspect of appointments is that the governor wants to find the best person for the job, someone that has the interest of the people at heart,” Stacy said.
“He encourages folks from all walks of life that have an interest in good, ethical government to submit their names.”
Dale County Commission Chairwoman Eunice Hagler said she was appointed less than a month after the death of Floyd Johnston.
But with no mandatory timeline, commissioners said business would have to go on.
One such county decision will likely be approving the budget, while another will be approving a resolution that would begin the process for a vote on whether to have a full-time chairperson.
“Some things we have got to get moving on, but it’s been a long time since Mr. Glenn’s not been sitting here,” Commissioner Gerald Harden said.
