Published: April 2, 2009
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Fla., has issued a small stream flood advisory until 5 tonight for Houston, Henry and Geneva counties, and for Jackson and Washington counties in Florida.
This includes Dothan, Cottonwood and Marianna. Early County, Ga., including Blakely, is included in this advisory.
Widespread heavy rainfall developing over the eastern Florida and western Big Bend into southwest Georgia.
At 8:53 a.m., the NWS Doppler radar indicated a widespread area of thunderstorms developing across the area generating very heavy rainfall. These storms are producing rainfall rates in some areas of up to 4-to-6 inches per hour. Total accumulation of up to 6 inches possible is likely this morning and afternoon.
Areas on low-lying streets adjacent to ponds or drainage ditches and intersections may flood businesses and homes in flood prone areas should prepare for the possibility of damaging floodwaters.
Continuous heavy rains will cause area creeks and streams to swell quickly. Residents along these creeks and streams should be ready to seek higher ground.
Do not drive through flowing water. Nearly half of all flood fatalities are vehicle related.
