Emergency personnel from Ashford and Cowarts transport a victim to an ambulance Thursday night following a house fire.
A trailer caught fire in Cowarts Thursday night, leaving a woman in the hospital and a dog dead.
According to Cowarts Fire Chief Roger Nall, the woman was not a resident of the trailer, which is part of a trailer park at 3855 Jordon Ave.
“We did not pull her out. The neighbors pulled her out after she went back in for the dog,” Nall said. “She had smoke inhalation, and she was taken to (Southeast Alabama) Medical Center at this time. She was breathing and did have a heartbeat, but she was unresponsive. Unfortunately, the dog didn’t make it.”
While workers were in the trailer attempting to extinguish the fire, something inside the trailer exploded.
“We had crew inside, and there was something that blew up in the back,” Nall said. “But everybody’s accounted for, and we’ve got it under control.”
Nall said he was unsure what caused the fire.
