A tenured teacher in Alabama’s public education system, Charlene Schmitz remained employed until the end of May 2008. She’s been incarcerated in federal prison in Tallahassee since her conviction but remains on the payroll of the Washington County school system, which has hired another educator to replace her. Since Schmitz’s dismissal, the system has paid more than $70,000 for her salary and benefits.
