Dale County program helps families ID belongings
For years, stolen merchandise has set in the Dale County Sheriff’s Office waiting for the rightful owners to claim. But without receipts or serials numbers, the task of returning the items was almost impossible. Until recently. Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said he has implemented a booklet system known as Operation Identification to help homeowners inventory their belongings inside their home.

Man who led police on chase charged with DUI
A Georgia man already facing several felony counts was charged with driving under the influence and several other traffic violations Friday in connection with a Thursday high-speed chase that began in Houston County and ended in Seminole County, Ga. Seminole County Sheriff David Swanner said Joe William Holden, 46, of Poulan, Ga., was charged with driving under the influence based on police observation after he was captured at the end of a 2-hour manhunt near the Chattahoochee River and Georgia Highway 91. Holden refused a breathalyzer test, but deputies detected an odor of alcohol, prompting the charge.
Teen suspected in officer shooting out on bond for prior sex crimes
A shooting early Friday that left two Dothan police officers injured could have been prevented, a Headland woman said, if the suspect had been kept in jail for prior offenses. Dothan police say Andrevis Deon Davis, 18, opened fire on two officers at a Hobo Pantry convenience store during a robbery. Davis suffered at least one gunshot wound during the shooting. The mother of a Headland girl says the injuries to the police officers could have been prevented. In December 2007, Headland Police investigators charged Davis with sexually assaulting the woman's daughter during a home invasion. "He broke into my home with a hammer, it was my 14-year-old daughter and my two small children," the woman said. "This could have been prevented if they had not let him out or he had a steeper bond. This was a home invasion where a young girl was raped."

Repulsed by ‘Dexter’
I read with interest Dan K. Thomasson’s March 11 column concerning the primetime television program, “Dexter.” I agree with his statements. I feel that the CBS network has gone too far when it presents a serial killer in a glorified role during a time when children and teenagers will be watching television.

Defending pit bulls
As a proud and responsible American Pit Bull owner, I must write regarding your article “Like ‘a horror movie’, vicious dog mauling leaves 4-year-old in hospital.” The focus should be on the victim, not the dog. Should this really be front-page news? I am outraged that the media is so quick to headline any story of a pit bull-type dog getting into trouble.
‘Teach by example’
A few weeks ago, Wynette Newby defended her decision to produce a controversial video. The video included individuals demonstrating gang-like behavior, handling guns. Ms. Newby’s defense was simple — sex and violence sells. While this attitude offends most of us, we cannot place all the blame on people who embrace these ideals.
