And as far as his administration’s “socialist agenda” goes, it may be instructive to compare our nation’s public education system and compulsory attendance laws to one of the tenets laid out by Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels in The Communist Manifesto: “Free public education for all children.”

Lack of funding is a travesty
We do not envy the task of Dr. Nichols and other school administrators who must cut millions of dollars in costs while trying to maintain the quality of schooling our youngsters receive. It makes us wonder how the voters of our community could reject — overwhelmingly, a few years back, as we recall — a proposed increase in our picayune ad valorem tax to help fund our schools.

Pony up
One of the promises rolled out following the controversial passage of a one-cent sales tax increase was that the commission would give an additional $1 million to Dothan City Schools each year.
Hearing, but not listening
With the city under a court order to make expensive modifications to the sewage system, increased fees are inevitable. At the public meetings, residents might have learned why. However, few residents bothered to show up.
