‘Idiotic’ remarks

» 11 Comments | Post a Comment

Terry Everett, Alabama’s lame-duck congressman from the 2nd District, has hinted that he is considering a run for governor after he concludes his 8th term in Washington.

We’d rather he just head on to the farm; Alabama has enough image problems already.

Everett hasn’t helped. Last week, the congressman unleashed a harsh personal attack on Democratic U.S. Rep. John Murtha, a decorated Vietnam veteran whose positions Everett opposes.

“... (D)on’t talk to me about him being an ex-Marine. Lord, that was 40 years ago. Thank you for your service as being an ex-Marine, but that doesn’t mean you’re (not) an idiot, and he is,” Everett said.
“Cut-and-run John Murtha is in charge of the appropriations committee for defense, and he is certainly no friend of the military.”

Everett’s partisan diatribe reads like a Fox News script from the pen of Karl Rove, only less plausible.

The Democratic-controlled Congress has increased spending on Veterans Affairs and more than doubled funding for troops and veterans in a new GI Bill, which, incidentally, Everett voted against.

The GOP has anchored the presidential bid of Sen. John McCain in his military service and POW experience, which should rightly command a great deal of respect.

That Everett, who spent his military tour in peacetime Europe in the late 1950s, would be dismissive of Murtha’s decorated combat service reveals a great deal about his attitude toward our troops and veterans — unless one is Republican, it apparently counts for nothing.

Everett owes a very public apology to Rep. Murtha, the U.S. House, America’s military and veterans and the people of Alabama.

Like Murtha, Everett is no idiot. But his remarks, even if made on a low-power AM talk radio in southeast Alabama, were, at best, idiotic.

Senator’s Everett’s remarks about Mr. Murtha are the pot calling the kettle black.  Everett did nothing to assure that the Aviation Test Center would stay at Ft Rucker.  Now we know why.  In his desire to run for governor he did not want to give the population to vote against.  Much like Benedict Arnold Mr. Everett sold out his benefactors for personal gain.  As for his veteran support it does not exist since his announced retirement.  I have personal knowledge since I have been waiting for over a year for his help in correcting a mistake with the Veterans Administration.

TERRY EVERETT RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR WILL BE AS BIG OF A JOKE AS HIS TIME IN CONGRESS HAS BEEN

Freedom of speech and freedom of press are a wonderful thing for sure.  That does not however, translate into elected officials or anyone else making traitorious comments and accusing our men and women of cold bloodied murder before the facts are known.

If someone really believes that Carl Rove (who is no longer in government) and Fox News has something to do with this, let’s see the proof.

Thank God for the men and women who fight for freedom on behalf of all of us.  To those who have served, freedom has a special flavor the protected will never know.

I would think it has everything to do with it myself and it’s rather funny that some are defending these two.

Isn’t it a wonderful thing, to be able to think and say what you really want too, even in the deep south as we are?  Thank God for freedom of speech and freedom of press.  Without it, well, some around may be happy, but at what cost?

Dear Sirs,
Remember the charge that Hillary Clinton did not have to worry about sniper fire at Sarajevo?
In an otherwise scurrilous book, DERELICTION OF DUTY, Robert Patterson narrated how he, Senator Biden, Senator Dole and Senator Warner encountered sniper fire that caused their plane to take evasive action.
Since Milosevic was apprehended in 2001, I doubt if Senator Clinton’s trip there was uneventful.

The characterization of Murtha by Mr Everett is entirely correct. With luck Murtha will be sent packing to one of the numerous nursing homes in his district that bears his name. He has some real competition this time in the form of a retired LTC from the US Army, William Russel.
I wish Mr Russel good luck and if you want to help send Murtha packing visit here and donate.

I live in GA, but being a veteran anything that can be done to get Murtha out of Congress I support. He has never apologized to the Marines he slandered and convicted in the press, who have since been cleared of all charges.

What does Fox news and Karl Rove have to do with this? What a cheap shot! You’ve just used a lot of ink condemming Rep Everett for his lapse of judgement but are you not guilty of the same thing?

Representative Everett is correct on his assessment of John Murtha.  It seems that you are very similar to Murtha.  The true hurts.

In response to your ‘Idiotic’ remarks, Representative Everett is not only correct in his assessment of John Murtha, he has every right to be
critical of this EX-Marine Traitor.  Murtha was an Intelligence Officer in Vietnam and not subjected to the pressures of combat troops making split second decisions to save their lives.

I have been on a campaign with 4 letters so far to John Murtha, for
castigating 8 Marines facing death in combat whom he accused of being
“cold bloodied murderers”, before they ever had their day in court.  So far, 7
of the 8 Marines have been exonerated.  Of the 7, the Battalion Commander of
the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, LtCol Jeffrey Chessani, who had his charges dismissed by the military judge on June 17, 2008 citing unlawful
command influence, is awaiting the outcome of a government appeal of the
ruling.  The 8th Marine was the Platoon Sergeant, Staff Sergeant Wuterich,
who is awaiting a delayed trial.

With only 1 Marine still facing trial, and 1 Marine awaiting the outcome
of an appeal, you would think that this lowly traitorous creature John Murtha,
who wrongfully accused these Marines of being cold bloodied murderers in a
combat zone before they ever had their day in court, would have something
to say since he was so deadly wrong.  And what have we heard from Murtha?
Nothing.  So far he has chosen not to respond to my and many other calls
from various folks including the media, regarding an apology for his actions.  So I believe that Representative Everett has every right to say
what he did and is justified in his criticism of Murtha.

This is an important issue my fellow Americans.  How can we expect to
train, equip, and teach our young men to make split second decisions in combat to take lives in order to save their own, then send them into battle only to have them accused of being cold bloodied murderers by an EX-Marine
Congressional traitor before he even knows the facts?  The answer is ...
we not only should not expect it, we should not allow it to happen.

Otherwise, what will occur is more Marines (and soldiers, sailors, airmen,
etc.) being put in harms way and possible killed because they second guess their split second decisions as a result of what might happen to them
after the fact.  War is ugly, it’s detestable, it’s never fair to our side
because we play by a set of rules; and it is despised MOST by those who must wage it.  But they do it because that is what they are trained to do for the
love and preservation of freedom, and for the defense and preservation of the
greatest country on the face of this earth; the United States of America.

It is important for us to speak out and do something about an elected official, or any other individual regardless of party affiliation, who accuses our military of being cold bloodied killers in a combat zone before they have all the facts.  I have been in a combat zone and understand full well the pressure these troops are under to make the “right decision” with split-second timing.

Representative Everett has nothing to apologize for.  As a Retired Marine
and Vietnam Veteran, I believe I have earned the right to be critical and
will do so whenever an elected official turns their back on the very troops
they send into combat.  That used to be known as a TRAITOR.

Thank you Representative Everett for speaking out and calling this coward
what he is.  As I said, years ago he would be considered a TRAITOR.  Now
we just turn a blind eye to such things.

I am really surprised at my hometown Dothan Eagle.  What has happened to
the conservative values of putting our troops first over a TRAITOR.

And what does Fox News or Karl Rove have to do with any of this.  You are
really on a stretch now.  I remind you that the Democratic-controlled Congress is meeting as we speak with an agenda of cut and run in Iraq.  They did not have a choice but to increase spending on Veterans Affairs and for our troops, otherwise they would look like the idiots they are.

I take issue with you that the “GOP has anchored the presidential bid of Sen. John McCain in his military service and POW experience, ...“  McCain is reluctant to speak of his POW experience as are most Vietnam Veterans.  HE has anchored his bid on being a leader, someone with experience, real knowledge about world affairs, not someone still wearing diapers.

You might get away with saying that Everett, in being dismissive of Murtha’s decorated combat service is revealing.  But I for one will not call him a decorated Marine, a Marine Colonel or even a Marine, until he apologizes to those real Marines who have been exonerated and to their families who have suffered at the hands of Murtha for over 2 years.  To me he is an EX-Marine and a TRAITOR.

Again, Representative Everett owes no one a public apology, especially Murtha, since he has not apologized to those Marines he wrongfully accused.

I agree with Rep Everett, Murtha is an idiot, and I hope the Army Reservist
LtCol who is running against him this November puts this TRAITOR into
retirement.

I am really surprised that such an article like this would come out of The
Dothan Eagle.  My Uncle Ken Hogg must be turning over in his grave at this
very moment.

Respectfully,

“Everett’s partisan diatribe reads like a Fox News script from the pen of Karl Rove, only less plausible”

That line in your editorial says quite a bit about your editorial leanings.

Not that I’m surprised but it is good to know where a paper stands in matters of politics.
