Disgusted by legislature

Most people would not keep a dog that behaves like our state legislature, yet we tolerate lawmakers who repeatedly show disdain and scorn for the people they allegedly serve.

Importance of JROTC

As the past Senior Naval Science instructor at Headland High School, I was appalled to hear of the possible demise of the unit. I agree fully with Maj. Gen. Roger Peterson’s May 2 letter to the editor.

No one knows when is ‘The End’

With regard to Rick Pierson’s May 2 letter saying that “The End” has already passed, his argument is flawed from the opening sentence. He writes that God punishes people because they sin. That is not entirely correct. God does not punish “you” because “you” sinned, he punishes man — everybody — because of sin in the world.

Most people would not keep a dog that behaves like our state legislature, yet we tolerate lawmakers who repeatedly show disdain and scorn for the people they allegedly serve. Fear and loathing is the position one must assume when this body begins to police itself, because we know from the past that rather than eating from the bowl, they are going to rip open the feed bag and gorge at the expense of the taxpayers.

‘The End’ has past?

In her April 17 letter to the editor, Angelia Penton relies on the old prophetic view of suffering: God punishes people because they sinned.

‘The End’ has past?

In her April 17 letter to the editor, Angelia Penton relies on the old prophetic view of suffering: God punishes people because they sinned. But the Jews had to come up with a new explanation when they continued to suffer even after turning and, once again, keeping God’s laws. This new theological worldview, called apocalypticism, arose around the time of the Maccabean revolt.

Protest oil prices

I read the paper, listen to the news on WTVY and read news on the Internet and I cannot believe the media is not calling for a reduction in the price of fuel. I understand that they “only report the news” but, by the same token, why do they strengthen the position of oil companies by going along with the prediction of $4-a-gallon gas by summer?

Keep ROTC programs

It was with great distress that I read that the Henry County Board of Education is likely to discuss axing the NJROTC program at Abbeville and Headland high schools. Frankly, I was distressed to the point of tears when I considered the deeper meaning of this move.

What has happened to Clio?

Not too long ago, there was a small but inviting little town in southwestern Barbour County. We had several nice stores, clean streets, smooth roads and home folks who knew just about everyone in town. There were nice homes with well-manicured lawns.

Truman and Hillary

There are only a few Democrats that I tip my hat to, Harry Truman being the chief among them. But I have to say I tip my hat to Hillary Clinton. She is one tough lady.

School funding

I guess “King” Pat Thomas, the city manager and some of the commissioners have selective memories. Mayor Thomas made all these meaningless promises before he took office then, when he stuck it to us with the tax increase, he promised the schools more funding.

A litmus test for candidates

I’m having a hard time deciding who to vote for in the Congressional race. Our founding fathers wrote that a person’s private life defines who they are and a person’s private life is what voters should look at when trying to define someone’s character.

No ordinary cat

On April 7, all of us at Southeast Alabama Veterinary Hospital lost one of our most important friends and co-workers. His name is Felix and he is a black and white tuxedo cat. Felix was always there and waiting at quitting time for us to fix his basket bed for the night and set out his food and water.

Growth is heading west

Born in 1918, my time here is limited so this is not for me, but hopefully will result in the best for the residents of Dothan.

‘What about vets?‘

The coming retirement of everybody’s favorite congressman this year has caused so many to suddenly come out of the woodwork seeking his seat. What scares me is allowing yet another useless bottom-feeder at the trough at the expense of Americans, Alabamians and, more than anything, the poor local folk who will no doubt face yet another four years of Washingtonian criminality, insanity and malfeasance.

Letter: Supporting Country Crossing

I find much of modern country music trite, over-produced, bland and painfully unoriginal. Further, I tend to abhor gambling, but not for any high-minded moral or religious reasons.

Letter: Bring in the jobs

It is unfathomable to me that anyone would oppose a legal business that would bring job opportunities to the Wiregrass area. I realize that the developer of Country Crossing, Ronnie Gilley, has said that it will bring more people into our area and create revenue, but it will also provide jobs for people already here who cannot find a job at all.

Remember Confederate soldiers

According to the Code of Alabama, Section 1-3-8, Confederate Memorial Day is the fourth Monday in April. This year, that will be April 28. I realize the day will come and go with little fanfare.

Stay away from Lotto

I hope the people of Alabama do not buy into the “lottery needed for schools” nonsense. We moved here from Florida and that is how the lottery passed there.

A matter of opinion

A letter by Dana Howell was published April 13. Here is my opinion of it. Her belief apparently is that as long as no one physically does something to her, then everything else they do is ok.

Defending Bush

I would like to respond to some of the criticisms of the Bush administration and its policies. About Saddam Hussein and weapons of mass destruction, we now know that Saddam wanted the world to believe he had them and had plans to get them once the restraints of the UN were lifted.

Letter: Is it about power?

We were so excited when we heard about “Country Crossing.” It would really put Dothan on the map. It would be wonderful for our area to be able to hear and see entertaining country stars from Nashville. It

‘Freedom is here to stay’

If Rebecca Wilkins had polled millions of citizens of the United States to come up with her favorite saying — “boo-hoo-hoo, used four times in her April 2 letter to the editor — she would probably have found millions who disagreed with her. She

Showers of blessings

The generosity shown in the Wiregrass Santa for Seniors campaign continues to bring blessings well beyond the Christmas season. Gifts and support came from all parts of our community.

‘Repent soon’

Justice removed her blindfold

Recently, Judge Lawson Little showed the residents of Houston County how fortunate they are to have such a strong lawand- order judge serving them. Judge Little gave the maximum sentence and showed no mercy for a heartless criminal, Corey Green.

Letter: Who gets to vote on bingo?

Merriam-Webster defines, “Vote: a usually formal expression of opinion or will in response to a proposed decision.” To make that decision, I have to have an option. To place a candidate’s name on a ballot, there must be two or more challengers and, therefore, a decision to be made. If there is only one candidate, usually the incumbent, then there is no decision — a winner by default.

Face reality

I tuned in to the Oprah program to find out about “the first pregnant man.” After a few minutes I understood he wasn’t a man, but a woman who had been taking large doses of testosterone to help in the delusion.

The South’s legacy

In Alabama, April is designated as Confederate History and Heritage Month by the governor and state Board of Education.
