On sports and religion
Sports has for some time been one of the materialistic gods of America. The good athlete, no matter the age, will be praised and allowed to get by more easily than most anyone else. We allow our children’s heroes into college or professional athletics without their character being a factor. Before anyone gets the wrong idea, let me say that I am a sports fan. I pay extra for sports channels and watch as many events as possible. However, I am disappointed in the disregard being shown of the importance of church services in the scheduling of sporting events.
We now have city league teams having practice and games on Wednesdays and Sundays. When Troy University scheduled baseball games to begin Sunday morning at 10 a.m., I’m afraid we have been silent too long.
