Letter: Can you do better?
Published: October 15, 2009
What a difference two weeks make. From the scoffing the Republican-based group Americans For Prosperity made regarding Chicago losing the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in hopes to discredit President and First Lady Obama, to Republicans in general fuming over the President becoming the third sitting U.S. President (fourth after former President Jimmy Carter) to become a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.
It is debated nationwide whether or not the President is worthy of such an honor, despite being in office for merely nine months. The bigger assurance is that it is a great indicator to the President to add substance above oratory style of in the delivery of achieving nuclear disarmament, unity amongst the Jewish and Arab nations and most importantly, an end to the current war in both Iraq and Afghanistan. While in America, there is still the matter of unemployment, a damaged economy and major health care reform that is in dire need of repair.
To those scoffers of President Obama, particularly those within the Republican sector, this quote from the recent Star Trek film comes to mind: I dare you to do better.

Reagan did WHAT? Are you totally insane? The most important leaders responsible for reuniting “the East and west of Europe” were Willy Brandt and Mikhail Gorbachev (with a major assist from declining oil prices that weakened the Soviet Union). Reagan’s little speech was too late to be of any importance.
I’m not familiar with day to day operations on Planet Vulcan. But,here in the good ol’ USA we got some problems.I
think sir,you are more upset about Chicago being black balled for the 2016 Olympics than alot of residents in Chicago. According
to a recent poll taken by the Chicago Tribune, of those polled 47% were against the Olympics coming to Chicago-
45% were for it with 8% not caring either way.Traditionally, the Olympics are nothing more than bottomless money drains
on the local and state taxpayer’s.Calgary and Sydney are just 2 that come to mind recently. Usually the only one’s who really benefit
are those local officials and their associates who have inside contacts and info.Much was the concerns of South Side Chicago residents.
Particularly with Mayor Daley and friends such as Patrick Ryan and Valerie Jarret and others.Patrick a Chicago real estate invester and entrepreneur.Jarret a close family friend of the Obama’s and politically connected to the Chicago political machine and held several positions in that same machine.A strong proponet of the Olympics coming to Chicago.
Also she currently is Obama’s “senior advisor on intergovermental affairs and public arrangements. The CBS network has called her “the other side of Obama’s brain”?
I don’t believe Republicans are really all that mad about Obama’s Nobel Prize as much as they are, like most of the free thinking world, shocked and stunned. At least Woodrow Wilson founded the League of Nations,Teddy Roosevelt negotiated a peace treaty between Russia and Japan halting a war,and Jimmy Carter managed to broker a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.According to Swedish news outlets Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for quote” His efforts to strenghthen international diplomacy and his vision for a world without nuclear weapons” end quote. You really have to admit, that’s a stretch! His name had to be submitted for nomination before his 13th day in office! So, he didn’t get the win for Chicago, at least the Swedes gave him the consolation Nobel prize.
He has sold out our friends the Poles and Czechs, pertaining to the promised missle shield. The Russians didn’t like the shield being there. So he eliminated it, to please Russia.Hoping for help with Iran and stronger sanctions against Iran. Russia’s response"Putin says, further sanction’s against Iran would be counter productive” FOR WHO?.China also blew Obama off, China’s Trade Minister praised it’s growing energy and trade ties to Iran. Even our friends the Israelis aren’t real trusting of Obama. The NY times ran a poll taken by the Jerusalem Post in Israel 6% of those polled believed Obama to be Pro-Israel - 50% said he was Pro-Palestine.At least he’s consistent. His popularity has dropped 22 points at home.
According to The Burea of Labor the unemplyment rate is 9.8% nationwide(10.4% in Alabama)But that only reflects the unemployed currently drawing their initial benefits. The true number of unemployed workers is closer to 14-16%.Including the 9.8 and the others who no longer draw benefits and are no longer seeking jobs for the lack of them.Good thing we got that stimulus bill signed in a hurry or the unemployment rate would have been over 9%.....ooops! Where are the jobs it was supposed to create?
To quote a real person: I’m not a member of a organized party,I’m a Democrat! Will Rodgers
In other words, don’t criticize the president. Gotcha.
There were those who live in Chicago that did not want the olympics. I guess they were all Republicans.
Yassir Arafat won the Nobel Peace Prize. The award is purely political now.
Peace amongst the Jewish and Arab nations. Yeah right.
I agree that we need to be out of Iraq & Afghanistan. And I’m sure that once we leave there will be peace.
Your last paragraph could be applied to any president and would be just as childish. Sounds kind of like ‘if you don’t like it you can leave.‘
That is what is so laughable, many have done better but this do nothing president has done hardly anything. Reagan reunited the East and west of Europe with one speech yet Obama gets it for good intentions? This is all hog wash and everyone knows it.
